Job Summary
The Transcriptionist is a medical language specialist responsible for transcribing dictation from physicians and other healthcare providers into accurate and formatted medical documents. This role ensures timely and complete documentation to support patient care and regulatory compliance. Duties include transcribing a wide range of clinical reports, proofreading, quality control, and communication with providers regarding report completion.
Essential Functions
Accurately transcribe dictated reports in a timely manner to ensure complete and compliant medical documentation
Flag dictation for missing or unclear information and coordinate corrections
Assist in contacting providers regarding delinquent reports or clarification requests
Proofread and correct transcribed reports for grammar, spelling, and medical accuracy
Perform quality control reviews within the electronic medical record (EMR) system
Maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA standards for protected health information
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
Proficient in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology
Excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment
Strong critical thinking and attention to detail
Familiarity with computerized transcription equipment and EMR systems
Constant keyboard data entry and prolonged sitting
Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand/arm movements
Occasional lifting or carrying of supplies up to 25 pounds
Requires near vision acuity, hearing, and speaking abilities
Office-based or remote environment within Health Information Services
Low physical risk; requires high mental focus and sustained attention
Rare exposure to biohazardous waste, communicable diseases, and other environmental risks
Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required
Completion of medical transcription training program or equivalent experience highly desirable
Licenses/Certifications
None required
Experience
Minimum of one (1) year experience in medical transcription preferred
Typing skills of at least 60 words per minute required
Knowledge of medical terminology required
