The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering Technology in the School of Science, Aviation, Health, and Technology at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) offers undergraduate programs leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering Technology.
The Department also offers an M.S.
in Mathematics with concentrations in Mathematics Education, Applied Mathematics, Community College Teaching, and Remote Sensing.
The primary purpose of the unit is to provide quality higher education and cutting-edge research experience to our students.
Description of Work The primary purpose of the position is to provide administrative support for a project focusing on research and STEM student engagement, and to prepare the logistics to help the PI manage the Consortium and perform the related work.
The project is on advanced manufacturing focusing on nuclear security, nanomaterials, nanosensors, and photocatalysts.
The Research Assistant (RA) will work closely with the PI to ensure project success by implementing the PI's planning and helping him organize and oversee project activities within set timelines and budgets.
The RA will provide regular updates to the PI and help him coordinate with external partners through organizing meetings and gathering documentation.
He/She will contribute to mentoring students participating in the project and provide other supporting needs to the students.
Also, He/She will contribute to the student publication and presentation of the outcomes of their projects.
Additionally, the RA will help the PI prepare progress reports for the sponsor and will collaborate on manuscript preparation for publication.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position Position requires strong skills in MS Office, MS Project (or similar), MS Teams, and Zoom Meeting software.
Also, it requires good knowledge of administration and financial IT tools, including PeopleAdmin, Banner, ChromeRiver, and Dynamic Forms.
Position requires good record of MS degree level research experience in the fields of specialty such as 1) Materials fabrication, Sample preparation, Materials characterization (Optical microscopy, Electron microscopy, Spectroscopic methods, Nanoprobe analytical techniques,… ), or 2) Computer Simulation for materials and devices, or 3) Machine Learning for materials research.
Position requires excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication with faculty and students; strong technical and analytical skills; ability to write technical reports; and effective organizational skills and customer service skills necessary for a research-oriented environment.
To ensure seamless progress, the RA will provide the PI with daily updates on the project's administrative and financial work.
Also, for effective coordination of project activities with external partners, the RA will organize and conduct meetings with the PI and the stakeholders.
Additionally, the RA will support the PI in preparing quarterly and semiannual progress reports required by the sponsor and the like, by gathering documentation from all participants and students across the consortium.
The RA will also help the PIs and other project personnel in the preparation and submission of journal or conference manuscripts.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation M.S.
in Material Science and Engineering, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
0 - 5 years of relevant experience in materials research administration.
