Mental Health Worker (MHW)

The Mental Health Worker (MHW) provides care to individuals with mental or emotional conditions or diasabilities under the direction of nurses and physicians. The Mental Health Worker closely monitors patients; physical and emotional well-being and report to medical staff.

Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods.

Escorts patients to on and off-site appointments as needed.

Maintains order and discipline within the institution and on the grounds.

Provides guidance and oversight to groups of patients.

Participates in patient engagement activities.

Assumes responsibility for the personal appearance and clothing of patients within an assigned area.

May help bathe, dress, and prepare patients for bed.

Takes care of the linen supplies for assigned units.

Makes rounds and notifies the supervisory officer of any unusual or suspicious situations observed.

Reports cases of illness.

Assists in leading group and individual patient activities including games and exercise.

Confers with patients and their families to answer basic questions.

Refers more difficult questions to nursing or medical staff.

Observes patients during daily activities, supports interactive behavior, and reports any unusual behavior, appearance, or attitudes to nursing and medical staff.

Aids patients with assist with and serving of meals.

May participate in staff discussions and evaluation of patients and, based on observation and day-to-day contact with patients, providing information and feedback on therapy to medical staff.

May be required to take notes on patients' behavior as requested by medical staff and write routine progress notes.

Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the facility, office or related unit.

REQUIREMENTS:

HS diploma or GED

BLS (American Heart Association)

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficientlt to perform the duties of this poistion.

PREFERRED:

Previous experience working in psychiatric and/or substance abuse patients

Previous experience in psycholgy or sociology

Biligual in Spanish or Creole
