Job Summary:
The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a water treatment facility, ensuring the production of safe, high-quality water in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This position serves as a team leader for plant operators and maintenance personnel, providing guidance and technical expertise while promoting a safe and efficient work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Oversight:
Supervise and perform daily operations of water treatment processes, including filtration, chemical dosing, and pressing sludge
Monitor and adjust equipment and controls to maintain optimal plant performance.
Conduct routine inspections of equipment and processes to ensure compliance with operational standards.
Team Leadership:
Provide leadership, training, and mentorship to support staff and contractors.
Assign tasks, monitor work progress, and ensure team adherence to safety protocols.
Implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and operational guidelines.
Regulatory Compliance:
Collect water samples and perform field laboratory analyses to monitor water quality.
Maintain accurate records of plant operations, including logs, reports, and data required for regulatory compliance.
Ensure compliance with all environmental and public health regulations, including those set by the West Virginia department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP).
Equipment Maintenance:
Coordinate routine and preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure reliability and longevity.
Identify and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and collaborate with maintenance teams to resolve issues.
Maintain an inventory of critical supplies, chemicals, and replacement parts.
Emergency Response:
Respond promptly to plant emergencies, including equipment failures and water quality incidents.
Lead the team in implementing corrective actions to minimize downtime and maintain service quality.
Collaboration & Communication:
Work closely with management, engineers, and other departments to support operational goals.
Provide updates on plant performance and identify areas for improvement.
Represent the plant during audits, inspections, and public inquiries as needed.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent;
Water treatment plant experience preferred.
Licenses & Certifications:
Additional certifications in water treatment or safety management are a plus.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Skills & Competencies:
Knowledge of water treatment processes, equipment, and regulatory standards.
An extremely high level of mechanical aptitude is required for this position.
Analytical and problem-solving skills for troubleshooting operational issues.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Work Environment:
Work is performed on-site in a water treatment plant environment with exposure to chemicals, noise, and various weather conditions.
Physical demands include standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting objects up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations.
