The Town is seeking an Automotive Technician to join our Fleet Department. This position performs skilled work in the mechanical repair, maintenance and service of all Town owned and operated automotive, light and heavy equipment. Repairs, inspections, preventative maintenance, fabrication and up-fits are performed with great accuracy and with an emphasis on timeliness and organizational priorities.

The successful candidate must have a valid driver's license and must possess, or have the ability to possess within 6-months, a Class A CDL with Tanker and Air Brakes endorsement. The minimum starting pay is $20.84/hourly without a CDL and $21.88/hourly with a CDL.

Understand the operation of and be able to operate many different types of construction and specialty pieces of equipment.

Diagnose, repair, and maintenance to all Town automobiles, police vehicles, construction equipment, light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel engines, tractors, sweepers, forklifts, generators, graders, mowers, backhoes, solid waste trucks, and other automotive and mechanical equipment; ensures their best performance and safe operation.

Diagnose and repair gas and diesel engines, front and rear suspension problems, computer and electrical problems, air condition systems, hydraulic systems, and drive train problems for both automatic and standard transmissions.

Basic body work, sand, prime, and painting.

Perform a wide variety of fabrication and metal repairs using oxygen and acetylene torches, MIG Weld, TIG Weld, plasma cutter, and Arc Welding.

Up-fit new police and utility vehicles with all public safety equipment, including light bars, radios, decals, etc.

Maintain shop area and equipment which may include cleaning, organizing, painting, sanding, scrubbing, and pressure washing.

Roadside assistance for broken down vehicles and equipment; have them towed or operated back to the shop in a timely and safe manner.

Assist in locating a variety of parts necessary to complete repairs.

Assist in snow removal duties.

Perform related work as assigned.

Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED plus a minimum of one year of education on the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, and/or light and heavy equipment

Experience: One year of related work experience

Valid driver's license

Class A CDL with tanker and air brakes endorsement required at time of hire or within six months of employment

Virginia Vehicle Inspection CertificateQualifications

Mechanical knowledge and operation of automotive/heavy duty equipment and of tools used in fleet repair operations

Basic computer skills to order parts, research and diagnose repair procedures

Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, adjust, and repair engines, electrical systems, transmissions, and adjoining mechanical components

Ability to perform body work repairs and painting on automotive/heavy duty equipment

Ability to weld and fabricate aluminum and steel

Ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic systems

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions

Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems

Ability to work independently and prioritize time and assignments

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other Town staff, and the public

Ability to read and understand various manuals, blueprints, wire and hydraulic schematics

Ability to keep a clean and tidy workspace free from debris and safety hazards

Ability to work safely and in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, and with Town laws, policies and standards

Work Environment

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. Physical Demands

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical ability and stamina sufficient to maintain continuous physical effort throughout shift, including frequent lifting, standing, stooping, bending, crawling, reaching, twisting, climbing and working overhead. The work requires significant mobility and agility to complete repairs. Ability to work in close confined spaces. Physical strength and ability sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under dusty, dirty, and uncomfortable conditions and in all kinds of weather.
