JOB TITLE: Traffic Controller
LOCATION: MRF Tajiguas Landfill

DIRECT REPORTS: None
POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible to alert traffic, or to stop traffic intermittently, as required by the progress of work in a facility. The traffic control operation provides protection for other employees and the public. A Traffic Controller shall be alert, neat appearing, and act responsibly.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:

Maintaining safe and efficient traffic flow in the unloading area, inspecting waste received at the MRF for hazardous and unauthorized waste, sorting of waste by type, and ensuring that drivers and pedestrians are kept at a safe distance from all heavy equipment and industrial operations.
Assist with backing in vehicles
Carry a broom to clear glass and other small amounts of trash to make it safer for everyone.
Watch for overhead clearances while trucks are dumping to avoid building repairs.
Make sure glass bottles and garbage bags are not on the tip floor
Strictly adhere to safe work practices
Determine traffic flow and vehicle placement locations
Assist with and provide direction(s) to backing vehicles
Always face oncoming traffic
Never leave the position until relieved
Know where fellow employee and equipment are, be aware of changes, and never stand among workers and equipment
Attend daily safety meetings
Be courteous, yet authoritative
Minimize conversations with motorist and pedestrians
Be positioned to compensate for limited sight distance, to provide maximum advance warning and always remain clearly visible to traffic
Try to maintain color contrast with background; consider sun glare on motorist
Maintain continuous communication with any customer
Establish eye contact with drivers to whom must be given direction
Do facility housekeeping and maintenance
Complete other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred but not required
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
A Traffic Controller must have the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Additionally, a traffic controller must have the ability to write simple correspondence, effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Must have strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
Must have the ability to continually stand and/or walk over variable terrain for the work period
Must have the ability to wear and support PPE requirements weighting a minimum of 1 lb. on the head, 2 lbs. on the body and 1 lb. by hand for the work period
Must have ability to complete repetitive tasks (twisting, turning, bending/stooping, reaching above and below shoulder, nonforceful gripping and/or grasping) for the work period
Must have specific vision abilities (close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision)
Must have the ability to hear unaided
Must safely manage traffic control through active work areas while gripping and/or grasping a traffic-control wand and utilizing radio communication for the work period

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and dirty. Required to put on protective outfits, like gloves, safety footwear, and hardhat.
Compensation details: 19-22 Hourly Wage
