Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU, Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union (BMU), and the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), the Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Operation Programs and Services (OPS), Sustainability and student government.

Associated Students is now hiring for the position of AS Sustainability Education Student Assistant. This is a part-time, non-benefited student position that will work no more than 20 hours per week while school is in session. The pay rate is $16.91 per hour. The schedule for this position is based upon department needs and is subject to change at any time. To be eligible for student employment, you must be enrolled at CSU, Chico and maintain at least 6 units (undergraduate student) or 4 units (graduate student) throughout the course of employment. AS Sustainability Education Student Assistant

SUMMARY

The Compost Education Student Assistant plays a key role in maintaining and enhancing the Compost Display Area (CDA)-a hands-on learning and demonstration site that supports campus-wide sustainability education. This position blends outdoor work with peer education, leadership, and community engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Maintain and improve the CDA through watering, weeding, planting, pruning, turning compost, cleaning, and ensuring site safety and structural integrity.

• Assist Sustainability Coordinator with developing, organizing, and hosting workshops, open hours, volunteer workdays, and seasonal harvest events.

• Assist with training and supervise student interns and volunteers.

• Assist with delivering interactive presentations and composting demonstrations for students, faculty, and community groups.

• Assist with maintaining partnerships with Facilities, faculty, staff, and campus departments.

• Coordinate field trips and manage the CDA visitor calendar.

• Provide professional outreach to promote the CDA as a sustainability resource.

• Support Associated Students (AS) sustainability programs, large team events, and office operations as needed.

• Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings.

• Other duties as assigned.

Work is performed mainly in an outdoor setting in all various weather conditions.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; verbal and written communication. Ability to walk, stand, kneel, and perform manual tasks for extended periods. Capable of lifting, moving, pushing, pulling up to 30 lbs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of or interest in composting, gardening, or sustainable agriculture.

Strong communication and leadership skills.

Experience (or willingness to learn) in supervising peers and coordinating group projects.

Enthusiasm for engaging the campus and community in sustainability initiatives.

Self-motivated, dependable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• Currently enrolled Chico State student taking a minimum of 6 undergraduate units or 4 graduate units.

• At least 6 months of experience in gardening, composting, landscaping or sustainable agriculture (paid, volunteer, or academic.)

Preferred Requirements:

Prior experience leading volunteers, student groups, or community events.

Basic knowledge of composting systems and sustainability practices.
