Job Title: Registered Nurse

Description:

Registered Professional Nurses are licensed professionals empowered to participate in an interdisciplinary approach to meet the expectations of those served.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include:

The job incumbent must demonstrate the critical care knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

This requires knowledge of the principles of growth and development as well as the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of the patient population served.

A professional level of knowledge of nursing practice and theory is required, generally acquired through completion of an accredited School of Nursing.

The job requires a minimum of four months intra-operative orientation and on-the-job training to learn department policies, procedures, and work routines.

Proficiency in the use of medical equipment and instruments is essential.

The incumbent must develop individualized care plans, assess responses to medical and nursing interventions, and evaluate these plans periodically.

Interpersonal skills are necessary to comfort patients, family members, and/or significant others.

Effective and concise communication with care providers is required.

Registered Nurses provide professional nursing care by performing both complex and routine duties in a surgical setting.

This includes scrubbing and circulating for surgery.

The nursing process is utilized to provide all levels of care, pre-, intra-, and post-operatively.

Nurses serve as team leaders on a rotating basis and function as clinical resource persons.

Assistance in identifying and resolving clinical and operational problems is required to enhance the quality and timeliness of patient care services.

Physical requirements include:

The ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 45 lbs from floor to waist occasionally.

The ability to stand continuously is required.

The job requires the ability to forward bend, perform rotational movements at the trunk, and forward reach with both hands frequently.

Bilateral hand coordination skill is necessary.

The ability to push and/or pull with both arms to manipulate wheelchairs, beds, supply carts, and patients requiring a force of up to 70 lbs occasionally is essential.

Accuracy in proofreading and checking documents is required daily.

Regular use of a keyboard for data entry and retrieval is necessary.

Close examination of specimens and images created by diagnostic equipment is required.

Working conditions may include exposure to infectious disease, although potential for personal harm is limited when following safety procedures.

There may be frequent exposure to moderately adverse working conditions due to certain patient care activities.

Occasional exposure to heavy lifting and toxic substances may occur.

The work environment is generally normal with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, or temperature extremes.

Annual training on hazardous waste management is required.
