General Description

Under the supervision of a Journey-level HVAC Technician, the Apprentice performs work of routine difficulty in the assistance of all areas of HVAC which includes installation, maintenance and repairs. This position will last for a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years with the opportunity to advance to the position of HVAC Mechanic. The timeframe is dependent upon the skill set, experience, initiative and the ability to successfully demonstrate knowledge in the HVAC career field. During this time, the HVAC Apprentice will be trained and evaluated by the skilled HVAC Technician and HVAC Team Leader. If the Apprentice fails to complete the training at the end of the five years, the Apprentice will be terminated.

Essential Job Functions:

Inspects, tests, calibrates, troubleshoots, repairs, maintains and services a wide variety of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment to include chillers, cooling towers, energy recovery units and built up air handlers.

Installs new equipment but not limited to split systems, ductless and package units.

Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on equipment.

Orders equipment and supplies (e.g. replacement parts, filters, sheet metal, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required equipment.

Drains old compressors, labels and dates unit by school, compressor model and serial number, and disposes by EPA protocol.

Works with other maintenance workers, school officials and staff to resolve maintenance problems.

Adjusts building automation systems in response to complaints or requests.

Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety issues.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Budgetary Responsibility:

Adheres to county spending guidelines.

Report Preparation:

Simple written report due upon completion of every work order.

Equipment Operation:

Utilizes equipment pertaining to heating and air conditioning to include but not limited to hand tools, ladders, telephone, computer, etc.

Contacts:

Facility Services personnel and office staff and administrators from individual schools. Occasional contact with vendors, building inspectors, contract workers.

Physical Demands:

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal indoor levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is exposed to extreme cold and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Qualifications

Basic knowledge of the HVAC field to include heating and conditioning systems and controls. Demonstrated ability to read and understand building plans, wiring diagrams, pneumatic, electrical and automation schematics and troubleshoot problems. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work well with others; to work independently and assume responsibility for installation and maintenance of assigned equipment. Basic computer and keyboarding skills.

Requirements

EPA approved certificate of completion for refrigerant transition and recovery to include Types I, II, and III. Building automation systems experience preferred, as well as, experience with a variety of electronic and pneumatic controls. Must have a Valid VA Driver's License. This position is designated as a driving position. In accordance with Policy 5431, driving record checks are performed annually on individuals occupying driving positions.
