Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Safety Inspector is responsible for a well-rounded fire prevention and fire safety program. This position is officially assigned the duties of inspecting buildings and facilities on a regular basis as required by State Law, County policy, or other rules and regulations of the State Fire Marshal as they pertain to administering and enforcing fire safety codes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform fire prevention code enforcement inspections of all properties assigned by the Fire Marshal.

Perform Florida Department of Health Department of Children and Family Services (CDF) inspections of Day Care Centers.

Provide advice to property owners who are seeking information of the requirements of applicable fire safety codes.

Maintain an up-to-date library of applicable fire safety codes.

Issue corrective notices when violations occur.

Prepares reports and maintains records regarding inspections and investigations.

Re-inspect all discrepancies found by other firefighters.

Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Must obtain considerable knowledge of all fire safety codes and ordinances:

Florida Fire Prevention Code

Clay County Ordinance

Building Codes

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes

Must possess a minimum of one (1) year previous experience in fire protection.

Required to obtain a Florida Fire Inspector certification within six (6) months of hire.

Must possess knowledge of fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, commercial hoods, fire suppression systems, stand pipe systems, fire extinguishers and hose systems, etc.

Must possess a Florida Driver's License with a clean driving record.

Valid Florida driver's license with clean driving record

Possess knowledge about properties, facilities, contents, and operations.

Must be knowledgeable of building construction and materials, and be able to recognize and remedy potentially hazardous conditions.

Demonstrated knowledge of electrical systems, heating systems, air conditioning, and ventilation systems.

Must be familiar with characteristics of hazards, proper handling procedures, storage of hazardous material, and procedures for handling flammable and combustible liquids that may be encountered of work sites.

Possess excellent communication skills with ability to interact with individuals and staff of all levels, e.g. management, business owners, contractors, vendors, and representatives of the insurance industry.

Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.

Employees may be required to perform duties, including the employee's normal work function or other emergency support functions as deemed necessary by the County, as assigned before, during, and after hazardous weather or state of local emergency.

Working Environment and Physical Demands

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Kneeling: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

Crouching: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

Sitting: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.

Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position, or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.

Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palms.

Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which, they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds with no less than a 40 db loss @ 55 HZ, 1,000 HZ and 2,000 HZ with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.

Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Visual requirement equal to that for clerical administrative whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, extensive reading, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
