Job Description

The court deputy will be responsible for a variety of duties including, but not limited to, maintaining order in the courtroom, escorting inmates to and from the correctional facility, serving the requests of the judge, searching inmates and/or visitors, conduct pre-courtroom preparation, monitor all activities within the courtroom, direct and supervise the jury pool, patrol the courthouse holding facility, check alarms, inspect transport vehicles, review docket and inmate records, oversee security area checkpoints and perform varied law enforcement duties when necessary. This a safety sensitive position.

General Description of Duties

Tasks: Complete assignments as directed; maintain work areas; interaction with inmates; search inmate property, report security breaches; move/escort inmate/inmate formations; search confinement areas/cells; court deputy/judge pre-court conference; guard inmates during court appearance; be on secure area checkpoint; conduct pre-court courtroom preparations; monitor/overserve activities in courtroom; direct/supervise activities of sequester jury; apply restraints; evacuate inmates from courtroom/courthouse; evacuate personnel and public from courthouse; check alarms; patrol courthouse holding facility; apprehend suspects; provide assistance to patrol deputies/detectives/other units; guard persons in custody; administer first aid/CPR; confront and control or disperse demonstrators, rioters, or crowds; conduct active patrolling of assigned areas; inform victims of victim's legal rights; counsel and/or separate people involved in domestic dispute; investigate non-police action calls; make arrests; book suspects; fingerprint persons; conduct field frisk or pat down search; respond to bomb/explosive threat; control disorderly or irate persons; prepare and execute affidavits, warrants, and subpoenas; and apply handcuffs.

Minimum Requirements

Must be a United States citizen.

Must be at least 19 years of age.

Must possess a High School Diploma or GED.

Must be Florida Law Enforcement Certified or currently attending a Florida Law Enforcement Academy.

Must meet the minimum standards of the Agency approved PAT (Physical Abilities Test).

Applicants who do not possess an Associate's Degree or equivalent must successfully complete the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test and achieve a score of 267 or higher in Verbal Skills and 241 or higher in Quantitative Skills (math).

Must successfully complete an oral review board and meet eligibility score for each.

Must have a valid drivers' license.

Must meet Agency approved Drug and Tobacco Policy.

Must submit to a complete background investigation, polygraph and psychological evaluation and found to be of good moral character.

Must submit to a complete physical examination mandated by FDLE requirements to include but not limited to: drug, hearing and vision screening, and EDK testing.

Applicants must never have been convicted of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statements.

Applicants with prior military service must have completed their military contract and received an Honorable Discharge (Form DD214 required).

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office requires all employees to have either an associates degree, 60 equivalent hours from an accredited college or university or the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test. The Wonderlic Basic Skills Test measures verbal and quantitative skills. Sworn *Law Enforcement and Corrections Deputies must achieve a minimum passing score of Verbal - 267 and Quantitative - 241. Civilians must achieve a minimum passing score of Verbal - 248 and Quantitative - 241.

*Law Enforcement Deputies/Recruits must meet additional requirements to qualify.

Local institution to administer the Wonderlic: Suncoast Technical College ext. 62322. Fee $40 Hours of Operations: Monday through Thursday 7:30am to 3:00pm Friday 7:30am to 2:00pm. TESTING IS SCHEDULED BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
