GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Equipment Operator II demonstrates the ability to and performs a full range and variety of maintenance, repair, and construction activities of municipal water distribution and wastewater collection systems through the use of specialized machinery and equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Ensure that safety procedures are followed.

• Lead Safety briefings.

• Clean, inspect, maintain, and operate equipment.

• Clean, inspect, maintain, and operate vehicles.

• Plan, organize, perform, and complete projects.

• Provide an assessment of water and/or sewer main condition.

• Communicate with peers, leadership, customers, other departments, and the public.

• Develop and implement a traffic control plan.

• Use electronic device to view, update, and close work order, asset management, and productivity tracking systems.

• Submit and respond to 811 locate requests.

• Maintain and operate valves.

• Complete fire hydrant inspections and maintenance.

• Assist in line inspections of collection system tv equipment.

• Lead a crew to perform a Water Division task such as a water or sewer repair.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

• Lead a team to perform an assigned task safely, efficiently and of a high standard of quality.

• Ensure that safety procedures are followed.

• Perform daily pre-trip inspections.

• Load fuel and oil.

• Check air pressure.

• Maintain a maintenance manual.

• Clean equipment and vehicle.

• Operate dump trucks and other vehicles in transporting personnel, tools, fuel, and equipment to and from work sites.

• Operate departmental equipment up to and including excavators, sewer jet, vacuum equipment, and tapping machines.

• Perform minor routine maintenance and repairs on vehicle and equipment.

• Schedule preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment.

• Determine type and quantity of material required for projects.

• Plan, organize, and perform tasks necessary to complete projects.

• Communicate directly with customers, addressing their inquiries, requests, and complaints.

• Communicate with other departments and the public regarding planned or on-going work.

• Communicate and complete assignments using electronic work order, asset management, and productivity tracking systems.

• Submit and respond to 811 locate requests.

• Maintain valves and complete fire hydrant inspections and maintenance.

• Operate valves to minimize impact on customers during emergencies and maintenance and/or construction activities.

• Assist in line inspections of collection system tv equipment.

• Perform all other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, & OTHER CAPABILITIES:

Environment: Work environment is informal, team-oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure.

Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather and temperature conditions. Working and/or walking may span long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Work is subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks, standby, and varying work hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to operate assigned equipment. FREQUENT bending, stooping, squatting, and climbing; standing, sitting, reaching at and above shoulder height, kneeling, balancing above ground, pushing and pulling, crawling, twisting at waist, upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; lifting of objects weighing up to 75 lbs.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents, equipment dials and gauges, color vision acuity.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience: Minimum of 24 months of relevant experience operating all department equipment utilized for maintenance, repair, and construction of water distribution and sewer collection systems.

OR:

A minimum of 12 months as a Maintenance Worker II and Equipment Operator I with proficient performance indicative via the Checklist Assessment for Equipment Operator II and no disciplinary action within the preceding six (6) months.

License:

Equipment Operator II: Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker and Air Brake

endorsements and acceptable MVR.

Work Keys Bronze Level certificate or higher.
