Job Purpose:

The primary responsibility of a Direct Support Professional is to assist individuals with brain injury, intellectual disabilities, and other neurological disabilities in achieving a challenging, stimulating, dignified life by serving as an advocate and liaison for and on behalf of individuals' rights and benefits.

Essential Functions:

Ensure ongoing health and safety for the person being supported.

Support, train, and guide people as they socialize, make purchases, volunteer, exercise, or engage in other community-based activities of their choosing, guided by the Person-Centered Planning process.

Provide transportation as deemed appropriate for the day's activities.

Complete online documentation which meets all OPWDD regulations in a timely manner.

Report all incidents to the Program Supervisor and agency QI Team.

Other duties as assigned within scope of practice.

Education and Experience:

High school graduate or equivalent; one-year experience in the human service field preferred

Qualifications:

Valid & current NYS Driver's License

Must have vehicle as job requires transporting people supported via personal automobile and/or agency vehicle.

Familiarity with computers; documentation is web based

No experience necessary, although previous experience in the field of intellectual/developmental disabilities is preferred.

Solid verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate with all persons supported and employees within various levels of the organization.

Must be able to complete training to obtain certification to perform Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention -Revised (SCIP-R), CPR, First Aide and AED; and maintain certifications

Must be able to talk, hear, sit for extended periods of time, stand for limited periods of time, use hand to finger, stretch with hands and arms, stooping or crouching for file retrieval and access, speaking with clarity and accuracy, listening, and the ability to engage in repetitive motion activities i.e., typing.

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Good motor coordination skills to include eyes, hands, and feet.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee travels by automobile and/or Agency Van and will be exposed to changing weather conditions.

Pay Range: $19.00/hour-$24.00/hour
