General Statement of Duties

Is responsible for the care and maintenance of shade trees, including treating, pruning, fertilizing, bracing and insect and disease management.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma plus three (3) years of experience as a tree climber working for a Connecticut-licensed arborist or for an equivalent licensed organization or arborist, or for a certified arborist (I.S.A.).

Must obtain a Connecticut pesticide applicator's license within six (6) months of appointment.

Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License with DOT Medical Card, Class B, within six (6) months of appointment.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of general tree physiology as well as tree care methods and equipment, including pruning, insect and disease management, fertilization, bracing, trimming, and removal.

Demonstrated knowledge of tree maintenance hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Proven ability to perform an aerial rescue under the supervision of Foreman or Supervisor.

Proven skill in the use of chainsaws, hand operated saws, pole pruners, pole saws, hand operated pruners, lopping pruners, axes, chippers and other trade standard tools and equipment.

Demonstrated ability to throw a rope over a branch thirty (30) feet above the ground, climb the rope safely and promptly, secure oneself in the tree, and continue climbing using approved ascent techniques.

Demonstrated ability to work at heights up to 100 feet; to cut and lift logs; to lift 100 lbs. occasionally, 50 lbs. frequently and 20 lbs. regularly.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Operates safely at considerable heights, while climbing trees using ropes, ladders, or aerial lifts.

Removes trees, prunes dead, dying, and diseased or weakened branches and leaders to improve tree health and appearance.

Employs technical climbing skills to protect property from damage, safeguard other workers, and ensure public safety when felling trees or branches.

Maintains safe working conditions while performing tree operations, including running let down lines, chipping brush, bucking wood, removing limbs of fallen trees and branches, and raking or sweeping.

Operates stump-grinding equipment to remove tree stumps.

Under the supervision of a licensed arborist, applies insect and disease management treatments by the spraying with pesticides, injection of systemic pesticides.

Plants trees and shrubs in accordance with approved standards and specifications, including proper mulching and maintenance of newly planted trees and shrubs.

Inspects trees for insects, disease and cultural problems, collecting and preparing samples for diagnostic testing.

Assists with snow plowing and highway maintenance during inclement weather, as needed.

Maintains accurate records, as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supports Town policies and philosophes.

All positions may be subject to an interview process. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates who will be invited to participate in the examination, or any part thereof.
