The General Ledger (GL) Accountant exhibits the skills to collaborate within a team, the ability to build strong and sustainable relationships, and the capability to interact within all levels of the organization.Under the direction of the Controller, this position assists in performing professional accounting, financial analysis and budgeting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB) and Washington State BARS manual requirements for state and local governments. This position may perform accounting duties in one or more of the following areas: general accounting including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and federal, state, and local grants. In addition, the position provides back up and support for the Accounts Payable Coordinator, the Payroll & Revenue Accountant and the Contract Administrator. The GL Accountant has the ability to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities, balancing long-term projects with the urgency of daily operations. Solid organizational skills and the ability to execute with high attention to detail are essential requirements for this role.

Examples of Duties

Provide assistance as needed in managing the Port’s fixed asset, small and attractive assets and capital project databases, preparing such reports as are required.

Provide assistance in compiling, preparing, and reviewing monthly recurring journal entries, month end closing procedures and preparation of monthly/quarterly financial reports.

Preparation of monthly bank reconciliation.

Analyze and reconcile various operating accounts and determine if they are properly recorded and prepare and maintain the appropriate sub-ledgers for interim and year-end financial reporting on accrual basis and in accordance with BARS requirements.

Cross train and provide assistance as needed in the following areas: accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and credit card recap processing and contract administration.

Reconciling of general ledger account balances to subsidiary ledgers and source documents, as needed.

Significant contact with staff from other departments and entities to provide information on accounting procedures and/or to verify information.

Close contact with other accounting functions, and data processing, are required to coordinate the various aspects of the assigned accounting function.

Participate in the annual audit process. Work with the Controller to contribute to the development of the AnnualFinancial Report to include creation of year-end accruals, adjusting and closing entries, and development of disclosure notes and other required supplementary information.

Project and analyze revenue and expenditure activity and relate projections on different accounting periods and basis of accounting for budget and special project activity.

Assist in physical verification of assets in accordance with policies.

Work closely with the Controller to assist the budget process in analysis and review of the annual adopted budget, long-range forecasting, and quarterly financial reporting.

Seek new processes and procedures utilizing new technology and implementing those methods.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

Four years of college education in accounting, and two years of experience in accounting work.

Desired Qualifications:

Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics Software.

Fixed Asset Management Experience.

Payroll, Payable, or Receivable Experience.

Familiarity with Washington State BARS manual reporting requirements.Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge and understanding of current general accounting principles (GAAP, GASB), guidelines, standards and practices, financial analysis techniques, terminology and procedures, bank and cash management procedures, and budgetary policies and practices.

Ability to apply these standards to daily accounting, interim reporting, and annual reporting.

Must have a basic understanding of the application of cash and/or accrual accounting and the ability to convert one basis to another.

Strong communication skills.

Ability to work independently and within a strong team of professional staff.

Ability to meet multiple deadlines.

Proficient in MS Office.

A current, valid Washington State driver’s license is required.
