EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs any task required in the operation, maintenance, repair and construction of the Town's potable water transmission and distribution system, including pipelines and appurtenances such as fire hydrants, valves, water services, water meters and related equipment of the Water Division using a high degree of skill. Operates and maintains equipment and vehicles of the Water Division including, but not limited to, trucks, dump trucks, excavation equipment, jack hammer, pumps, and all other division equipment. Performs special projects, maintenance of buildings and grounds, and all other work necessary to maintain and improve the Town's water transmission and distribution system, and facilities. Performs all work in a safe, efficient manner including, but not limited to trenching and shoring activities, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Completes other related duties as assigned.
Additional Duties:
May be subject to "on-call" duty, emergency calls and scheduled overtime work as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the facilities, pipelines and equipment of the water system; considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and procedures used in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of transmission and distribution mains, fire hydrants, water services, water meters, pump stations, and related facilities and equipment; good knowledge of safety standards, procedures and regulations related to assigned work; considerable ability to operate mechanical equipment required in assigned operations; good ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow Water Division employees, other municipal employees and the general public; ability and aptitude to comprehend, issue and follow clear and concise written and oral instructions; considerable physical stamina to work under arduous conditions; ability to exercise good judgment and work independently or as part of a crew on an assigned task.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school or trade school diploma, or high school equivalency diploma, plus three (3) years' experience as a Maintainer for a water utility or in the construction field with work experience in the installation and maintenance of underground pipelines (water main, sanitary sewer, storm drain or gas main), and related equipment or two years training in plumbing plus one (1) year of employment as a Maintainer/Laborer for a water utility or in the construction field with work experience in the installation and maintenance of underground pipelines (water main, sanitary sewer, storm drain or gas main), or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut motor vehicle operator's license. A valid State of Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B is preferred. A Class II Water Distribution System Operator Certification (DSO II) preferred.
