Position Purpose
- Under the general supervision of the School Principals, to serve as a tutor to maintain achievement in reading, writing and mathematics, implementing district approved curricula and programs.
Essential Functions
- Administers assessments provided by teachers to ascertain the particular needs of individual students identified as in need of reading, writing and mathematics instruction.
- Develops and/or implements reading, writing and mathematics strategies, instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments.
- Works with the classroom teacher to help students attain knowledge and skills in letter and word recognition, sentence and paragraph structure, vocabulary, proper word usage, writing, and mathematics.
- Conducts learning activities, incorporating technology and a variety of instructional methods and materials.
- Monitors student progress and the effectiveness of instruction.
- Maintains familiarity with district and Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning grade level objectives, for the purpose of maximizing student achievement on such tests.
Additional Duties
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principals and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

- Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, writing, and mathematics.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Qualifications Profile
Certification/License:
- Bachelor's Degree
Education:
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
Experience:
- Successful prior teaching experience for K-12 schools preferred.
