Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a detail-oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team. This dedicated group works to maintain the critical physical infrastructure that supports Amazon Web Services. Specifically, this team ensures that the data center's Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems operate at better than 99.9999% availability while providing first-class customer service to the teams and groups within the data centers.

Key job responsibilities

Support water system infrastructure operations and serve as a technical resource for water systems including: building monitoring systems, ultrafiltration systems, reverse osmosis systems, and oxidant systems, etc.

Perform water sampling and assist in maintaining Legionella prevention programs. Help implement Water Utilization Efficiency (WUE) procedures.

Follow and execute standard practices for operations and participate in training activities. Maintain preventative maintenance schedules and assist with spare parts inventory management.

Conduct routine pond maintenance, water sampling, and assist with repair work to maintain operations and compliance.

Provide operational input on water systems and infrastructure to help ensure reliability.

Assist with infrastructure improvements and system optimization projects under supervision.

Available to work outside normal business hours for routine maintenance and emergency response, including water remediation and system repairs.

Document and communicate technical information clearly, including basic reports and operational updates.

Work collaboratively with operations teams, Field Engineering, Environmental teams, and supervisors on daily operations and projects.

Follow safety procedures, state regulations, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements in all work activities.

Track and report on operational metrics and maintenance activities. Maintain logs of critical operations and water infrastructure status.

Utilize Microsoft Office suite and administrative tools to document work, maintain records, and support compliance requirements.

A day in the life

The Water Chief Engineer serves as Amazon's primary expert for water system operations and efficiency, maintaining mission-critical data center water infrastructure that must operate at maximum reliability. They manage operate complex water systems including water treatment systems, filtration equipment, distribution networks, pumping stations, and chemical dosing systems that directly impact data center cooling performance. The role requires directing and training technicians, implementing site-specific training programs, developing standard operating procedures, and event response scenarios. They manage water infrastructure projects from conception to completion, collaborating with engineering, operations, and design teams.

* Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent work experience)

* Demonstrated expertise in water infrastructure including certifications for: Water Treatment Plant Operator, Water Distribution System Operator, Backflow Prevention Device Tester Certification

* 2+ years of working with Federal and/or State water infrastructure regulatory compliance requirements

* Completion of specialized training programs or courses related to water treatment, distribution systems, and water quality analysis.

* Possession of relevant certifications or licenses as required by state or local regulations, such as: Ohio Class I or above Wastewater Treatment Certificate, Ohio Class I or above Water Supply Certificate, Ohio Class I or above Water Distribution Certificate, or appropriate Certified Professional Operator Certifications

* Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics

* Experience developing strategic technical plans, writing documents, and presenting to large groups

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $83,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
