POSITION SUMMARY
This position is part of a job classification in a four level Building Inspector progression series. Responsible for inspecting commercial and residential construction to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations and building and municipal codes. Conducts inspections of structures and materials; reviews and interprets plans; identifies code compliance issues and violations; prepares and maintains reports; meets with contractors, builders and homeowners, and enforces local, state and federal codes, laws and regulations; responds to complaints received by the public; participates in the development of educational materials; and maintains applicable databases.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Inspects residential and commercial buildings and structures for compliance
Reads and interprets building plans and codes
Approves or denies installation or construction
Inspects on-site electrical, building, plumbing, gas and mechanical work for conformance with City codes; enforcing City ordnances
Inspects work for compliance with plans, specifications and approved shop drawings and verifies location of key components
During construction, inspects building material and construction procedures
Reviews building permits and blueprints for new construction, additions, swimming pools, and remodeling by evaluating permits to determine code requirements, and reviewing case history.
Investigate citizen complaints concerning violations of building codes and ordinances; makes independent judgments and sound recommendations based on findings
Prepares and issues code violation notices, advising owner and contractors of necessary corrective action and following through for compliance
Provides feedback to site owners and construction personnel, identifying violations, and preparing correspondence and reports
Manages special projects consulting with architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and the general public regarding codes, plan reviews, and inspection findings
Demonstrates effectiveness in dealing with contractors and architects and engineers in enforcing the contract documents and upholding the City's best interest
Assists the Code Enforcement Division as needed
Writes thorough reports that document and detail a factual, chronological history of the construction, including problems that occur, inspection results and other pertinent project data
Provides administrative support by gathering information and completing requests, answering phones, entering data into the database, and maintaining inspection logs and records
Maintains a project file, including plans, specifications, approved shop drawings, change orders and important correspondence
Performs other job duties as required or assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
This position is part of a job classification in a four level Building Inspector series based upon the following criteria:
High School Diploma or successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) Test
Training and experience using a personal computer with Microsoft Office
Grade 7/B24-B31
Building Inspector I: First level in series.
Two (2) years of experience in building, construction or a closely related field
International Code Council (ICC) certified as a Combination Residential Inspector, consisting of four (4) certifications must be obtained within twenty-four (24) months of employment. And at least two (2) of the four (4) certifications must be obtained within twelve (12) months of employment

Building Inspector II: Second level in series.
Three (3) years of experience in building, construction or a closely related field
ICC certified as a Combination Residential Inspector

Building Inspector III: Third level in series.
Five (5) years of experience in building, construction or a closely related field
ICC certified as a Combination Residential Inspector
Texas State Plumbing Inspector’s License
Grade 12/C44/C51
Building Inspector IV: Fourth level in series.
Seven (7) years of experience in building, construction or a closely related field
Texas State Plumbing Inspector’s License
ICC certified as a Combination Residential Inspector
ICC certified as a Combination Commercial Inspector

Valid Class C Texas Driver's License
