Job Description

About General Fluidics

General Fluidics is a clinical diagnostics startup based in Watertown, MA developing the Axess™ platform, a breakthrough point-of-care system that delivers laboratory-grade performance across clinical chemistry, hematology, and immunoassays from a single blood sample. By integrating three “gold standard” analytical technologies into one compact instrument, we are transforming how clinicians access and act on diagnostic data. Learn more at generalfluidics.com.

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to join our R&D team and drive expansion of our diagnostic assay menu for veterinary and human health applications. This is a hands-on, experimental role, ideal for a scientist who thrives on creative problem-solving, assay development, and instrumentation work in a startup environment.

Reporting to the VP of Assay Development, you will independently design and execute experiments, interpret data, and optimize assay performance on the Axess™ platform. You’ll collaborate closely with our team of engineers and fellow scientists, contribute to analytical validation efforts, and help accelerate our path to regulatory clearance and product launch. As a company of 10, this is an individual contributor role but carries significant ownership over your workstreams. We value scientists who are resilient, resourceful, and as comfortable running critical assays as they are maintaining lab systems.

Key Responsibilities

Lead design, development, and validation of clinical chemistry, hematology, and immunoassays on the Axess™ point-of-care instrument.

Plan and execute complex experiments independently; analyze, interpret, and present results to guide development decisions.

Collaborate with engineers on system integration, troubleshooting, and instrument optimization.

Apply statistical methods and data analysis to support assay performance claims and regulatory submissions.

Author experimental protocols, technical reports, and supporting documentation in compliance with design control requirements.

Support quality systems through calibration, control protocols, and proficiency testing.

Maintain high standards of lab operation including safety, inventory management, and instrument upkeep.

Mentor junior staff in assay development best practices as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with 6–8 years, Master’s with 3–5 years, or PhD with 0–2 years of relevant industry R&D experience in biotechnology, molecular biology, or related field.

Proven experience in assay development, troubleshooting, and data interpretation in an industry setting (not academic or QC/manufacturing).

Hands-on skills in assay development, reagent preparation, and laboratory techniques (pipetting, biosafety cabinet work, etc.).

Familiarity with clinical instrumentation (e.g., flow cytometry, hematology analyzers, clinical chemistry, immunoassays) strongly preferred.

Prior exposure to diagnostic assay validation, design controls, or regulatory submissions strongly preferred.

Comfortable in a dynamic startup environment: onsite presence, ownership mentality, and willingness to tackle both high-impact experiments and day-to-day lab operations.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present scientific concepts and data.

Who You Are

Curious, creative, and energized by solving open-ended scientific problems.

Resilient in the face of experimental failure, with the maturity to adapt and keep moving forward.

Independent and confident in your scientific judgment, while eager to collaborate across disciplines.

Excited by the opportunity to help build a transformative diagnostic platform from the ground up.Company Description
