Description
The Finance Manager of Business Operations provides comprehensive financial oversight across Hampton University's diverse business functions, with primary responsibility for workforce development programs and subsidiary operations. This position offers broad exposure to university business operations while developing future finance leaders through cross-functional collaboration and strategic planning experience.
Examples of Duties
Workforce Development and Program Management
Provide financial oversight and day-to-day management support for Hampton University Workforce Development Enterprise and HU Cares programs
Monitor program budgets, track expenditures, and ensure proper fiscal stewardship of federally funded initiatives
Collaborate with program directors on financial administration and prepare reports for federal funding agencies
Support program expansion planning and maintain awareness of federal grant compliance requirements
Financial Operations Management
Oversee monthly and quarterly financial reporting for assigned business units and subsidiary operations
Conduct budget analysis and variance reporting for multiple functional areas
Support cash flow management, forecasting, and financial close processes
Provide financial analysis and recommendations to senior leadership on operational efficiency
Business Operations and Strategic Support
Collaborate with senior leadership on strategic planning initiatives across university departments
Provide oversight of subsidiary operations including real estate, athletics, and commercial investments
Support operational efficiency projects and participate in cross-functional teams
Assist in development and implementation of financial policies and procedures
Leadership Development and Cross-Functional Exposure
Gain exposure to strategic planning and executive-level decision-making processes
Participate in senior leadership meetings and university strategic planning committees
Lead special projects spanning multiple operational departments
Mentor junior finance staff and contribute to department development initiatives
Typical Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field
Master's degree (MBA, MS Finance, MS Accounting, or related field) preferred
CPA certification or progress toward certification preferred
Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, or business operations
Previous experience in higher education finance or operations preferred
Experience with workforce development or federally funded programs preferred
Demonstrated leadership experience and team management skills preferred
Supplemental Information
Strong knowledge of financial analysis, budgeting, and reporting principles
Understanding of federal grant compliance requirements and regulatory frameworks
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
Proficiency with business intelligence and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms preferred
Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet critical deadlines
