Job Description
The Transportation Heavy Equipment Operator - Special Operations position operates sweepers and street flushers to clean streets and bike lanes. This position also operates automated leaf truck or dump truck with walk behind leaf machine during leaf collection, operates snow and ice removal equipment and anti-icing equipment. This position is required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather.

Duties and Responsibilities

Operates various types of heavy equipment including street sweepers and flushers, automated leaf trucks, dump truck with walk behind leaf machines, anti-icing equipment, snow and ice removal equipment
Oversees and performs semi-skilled general maintenance
Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks
Oversees and performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
Inspects and maintains tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment
Inspects facilities and structures; identifies and documents required repairs
Has the skills, ability, and desire to train and develop others
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 1 to 3 years' experience in medium to heavy construction equipment operation or related work
OR
Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid North Carolina Class C driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working around buried and underground utilities
North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a Tanker Endorsement

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Very Heavy: Exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, at a construction site and in and around vehicles. Employees may occasionally be in confined spaces, and a warehouse or shop environment.
Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles and loud noises. Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate, communicable diseases and toxic or caustic chemicals or substances.
