The University of South Dakota invites applications for the position of Director of Continuing and Distance Education (CDE). This strategic leadership role is central to advancing USD's mission of delivering high-quality, accessible academic programs to learners across the region and beyond.
As Director, you will lead the development, implementation, and oversight of USD's distance and continuing education initiatives. You will collaborate with academic units to expand online and off-campus offerings, manage customized and professional education programs, and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including NC-SARA and licensure requirements. This position also supervises a dynamic team, including the State Authorization Specialist and other support staff, and serves as a key liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide strategic direction for distance and continuing education programs
• Lead customized and externally funded educational initiatives
• Oversee state authorization and licensure compliance
• Manage departmental operations, budgets, and personnel
• Collaborate with deans, chairs, and campus units to align offerings with institutional goals
Qualifications:
• Graduate degree required; a combination of education and experience may be considered
• Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant experience in higher education, online learning, or program administration
• Demonstrated knowledge of compliance frameworks, including NC-SARA and federal/state regulations
• Strong leadership, communication, and data-informed decision-making skills
This is a full-time, 12-month, non-faculty exempt position located in Vermillion, SD. Occasional travel, evening/weekend work, and a valid driver's license are required.

The Division of Continuing & Distance Education (CDE) serves as a dynamic extension of the University of South Dakota's academic enterprise, advancing the institution's mission to deliver high-quality, accessible education to learners across South Dakota, the region, and beyond. CDE empowers students to complete degrees, enhance professional credentials, or pursue personal enrichment through flexible, innovative learning pathways.
CDE administers a robust portfolio of 36 undergraduate and 43 graduate online degree and certificate programs, as well as face-to-face offerings in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Yankton, SD. Field experiences are facilitated statewide, nationally, and at select international sites, ensuring broad access to experiential learning. The division also coordinates customized instruction, externally funded courses, and professional development workshops, serving a diverse population of lifelong learners.
As a strategic partner in academic innovation, CDE authorizes Continuing Education Units (CEUs), supports compliance with state and federal regulations, including NC-SARA, and fosters cross-campus collaboration to expand educational reach.
