ML Specialist Job Description
The job of Multilingual Learner Specialist (ML Specialist) was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing Multilingual Learner students' ability to effectively perform courses of study in the English language; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing English Language Development (ELD) lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with and coaching regular education teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress in English Language Development. The ML Specialist will monitor the needs of students who have exited the English Learner program for Monitored Years One through Year Four.
Teacher English Language Fluency: - SCS is required to certify that all teachers in any language instruction program for limited English proficient students are fluent in English, including having written and oral communications skills. Teachers will be assessed as follows: Listening & Speaking - The interview will be scribed and scored. Reading will be satisfied through a transcript from an English speaking college or bilingual college program. Writing - A writing prompt will be completed after the oral interview. The prompt will be scored using a rubric.
Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor's Degree. Current North Carolina Teacher Licensure, and licensure as an English-as-a-Second Language teacher per North Carolina licensure guidelines. Proficient technology skills; strong leadership and collaboration skills; strong instructional skills inclusive of oral and written communication
Preferred: prior experience in conducting workshops/training sessions for adult learners
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the director of federal programs, the responsibilities of this position fall into two categories. As a teacher, the ML Specialist is responsible for providing direct ELD instruction to students, individually or in small groups, to enable students to develop strong English Language skills. As an ML Specialist coach, the position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive English Language Development and Support program at the assigned school(s) through coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for English Language Development (ELD) and instruction. As the ELD Interventionist, the ML Specialist must have the ability to analyze WIDA Access data and other multiple points of data; stay abreast of research-based practices, and support teachers and students with appropriate interventions.
School-Level ML Specialist:
Coordinate, facilitate, and implement school-level English Language Development strategies ? Provide direct, intensive support to new Multilingual Learners until they exit the ML program, and continue to monitor those students for four years after exiting.

Implement and execute positive relationships and quality communication between all stakeholders.
School-Level ML Coach:
Serve as a PLC member with other School-Level ML Coaches (district) and support K-12 school-level PLCs (school) as deemed necessary by the director of federal programs ? Work with SCS Director of Federal Programs
Grow professionally in pursuit of helping students grow in the English language ? Attend professional development to enhance the knowledge of pedagogy and content, about Multilingual Learners
Serve as a resource in the area of ELD for teachers and school administrators including, modeling lessons, co-teaching lessons, and planning embedded language support lessons ? Provide Professional Development at (school level and district level) to implement various instructional strategies
Generate, interpret, and make instructional recommendations from multiple points of data ? Remain grounded in the content standards and objectives to facilitate integrated and concept-based instruction
Assist teachers with collection of data, analysis of data results, and support the sharing of findings with staff
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
Provide essential leadership for the school's entire Multilingual Learners' program ? Serve as an active member of the Student Services Team in diagnosing English Language deficits and creating plans with skill-specific interventions to address specific student needs ? Collaborate with teachers to identify the English needs of the ML program's students ? Problem-solve with teachers to develop best practices for continuous academic growth for students in ELD.
