Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions appropriately, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. #CA-LA

Minimum Qualifications

1 year work experience in a similar setting Operating Room

Work experience in an advanced first scrub practitioner role in more than three specialty surgical areas

High School Diploma or equivalent

Surgical technologists are credentialed by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) and are eligible for the Certified Scrub Technician (CST) Examination. Current requirements mandate that qualified candidates for the certification examination have acquired a certificate or degree from an accredited education program. All recommended educational and experiential standards are intended to support all requirements established by the NBSTSA for a qualified candidate. A candidate for the certification examination must be a graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.

Knowledge and understanding of medical and surgical terminology.

Knowledge, skills and experience in assigned surgical specialty area and shift. Knowledge and understanding of AST standards and recommended practices (Association of Surgical Technologists).

Knowledge and understanding of CORT guidelines (Certified Operating Room Technician)

Knowledge and understanding of AORN standards and recommended practices (Association of Operating Room Nurses).

Knowledge and understanding of principles of and practices of asepsis/sterile techniques, instrumentation, supplies, and equipment usage and processing in assigned specialty.

Knowledge and understanding of common major surgical procedures for major surgical services. Knowledge of emergent and routinely used equipment.

Knowledge of handling delicate equipment and instruments.

Knowledge and understanding of AAMI recommended practices (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation).

Knowledge and understanding of department and hospital policy and procedures.

Knowledge of conducting Quality Assurance monitors pertinent to assigned area and practice.

Knowledge of handling infectious waste and hazardous substances (chemicals used for cleaning, sanitation, disinfection and sterilization).

Ability to prioritize assigned duties.

Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal communication and relationships with coworkers.

Ability to cope during stressful situations and working in a highly paced environment including dealing with surgical emergencies.

Ability to set priorities, organize work independently and for others.

Must be able to work with adaptability, flexibility & maintain composure during stressful and/or adverse conditions.

Ability to work/stand for long periods of time in a close environment with others. Hear and speak well enough to communicate with others directly and over the phone

Must have the ability and fine motor dexterity to manipulate micro sutures and micro instruments, appropriately manipulate surgical instruments/equipment, computers, keyboard, and mouse. Physical strength to assist in moving and/or lifting patients and surgery equipment.

Physically able to lift at least 25 pounds. Must see well enough to read charts & instructions. Proficient in using standard business software including email and common word processing applications.

Demonstrate error-free prose that conveys meaning to readers with clarity and fluency. Write text that effectively communicates ideas, facts, and/or information to an audience appropriate for the assignment. Apply the conventions of standard written English

Preferred Qualifications

Certification in Surgical Technology is preferred.

The preferred entry-level education for the surgical technologist is the associate degree, but it is not required. All educational programs are expected to meet the minimal curriculum requirements defined in the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology®. Only accredited programs will be considered to meet the criteria.

Department Overview The Division of Perioperative Services delivers patient care through provision and management of capital, supplies, instrumentation, and technological support as well as human resources in collaboration with medical and para-medical staff to effectively manage patients undergoing elective, urgent, and emergent surgical intervention. This position is responsible for assisting with patient care in close working relationships with the surgical team. The role primarily provides technical support for patients undergoing urgent and emergent surgical interventions in various locations to include Pavilion Operating Room, UT Surgery Suite, Same Day Surgery Center, and Children's Surgery Center.
