Special Education Communication Facilitator supports students with hearing or other communication impairments by clarifying instructions, assisting with communication methods, and fostering a language-rich environment within the classroom. Key duties include preparing and reinforcing lessons, assisting with classroom routines, collecting data on student progress, helping with personal care needs, managing behavior, and collaborating with teachers and staff to ensure students can access educational activities and peers.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Support:

Reinforce lessons and assist students in achieving classroom objectives.

Tutor students individually or in small groups on specific skills and assignments.

Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipment.

Communication and Language:

Provide a language-rich environment using sign language, gestures, pictures, and icon systems.

Clarify instructions, stories, and other spoken exchanges to help students with hearing loss or other communication needs.

Assist students in developing independent communication systems.

Classroom and Student Management:

Assist with classroom routines, organization, and maintaining a safe learning environment.

Help manage student behavior and intervene in crisis situations when necessary.

Assist students with physical needs and personal care, such as feeding, toileting, and hygiene.

Collaboration and Administration:

Communicate with teachers and other staff about student progress and any problems that arise.

Assist with data collection and progress monitoring as directed by the teacher.

Perform clerical duties, such as filing and maintaining student records.

Professional Development:

Participate in training programs and staff development to meet students' communication and educational needs.

Required Skills and Qualities

Sufficient sign language skills and other communication methods.

Strong physical stamina and the ability to provide physical support.

Patience, emotional control, and the ability to maintain a friendly and supportive attitude.

Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, students, and families.

Willingness to learn and adapt to new communication techniques and student needs.
