GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This classification performs the functions necessary to prevent the establishment and spread of noxious weeds on County roads and County property. This position also performs routine functions of the Road Department particularly traffic sign maintenance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position will work under the general supervision of the Road Supervisor who assigns work orally or in writing. The employee is responsible for identifying problems and accomplishing work according to previously agreed upon goals.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of other employees is not normally a responsibility of positions of this classification.
Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
(The following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management).
Work to control noxious and undesirable weeds on County roads and property by an integrated approach using residual and selective herbicides, mechanical and manual controls
Maintain detailed records of weed control activities including daily spray reports in writing and Pesticide Use Reporting System (PURS) requirements on computer.
Ensure compliance to safety policies and procedures regarding the use of herbicides and equipment. Observe all safety rules and regulations.
Install, repair and maintain traffic control and road name signs on County roads, including sign inventory and records. These tasks require the operation of a sign heat lamp machine.
Assist in maintaining County roads including chip sealing, tree trimming, patching with asphalt, cleaning borrow pits, installing culverts, graveling and grading of roads. These tasks require the operation of motorized equipment such as trucks, loaders, backhoes, graders, rollers and other comparable equipment.
Performs minor repairs on County spray and road equipment.
Performs manual tasks including shoveling, raking, hauling, cutting and flagging.
Regular physical attendance is required
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Two years responsible experience in herbicide application; possession of a valid class A CDL with an acceptable driving record per the County's vehicle policy; possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator's license with Right-of-Way and Regulatory Weed Control categories or be able to obtain said license within three months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THIS POSITIONThorough knowledge of: chemicals and biological controls used in weed control as well as plant species and soil types. Reasonable knowledge of: Federal and State statutes that govern noxious weed control activities. Knowledge of: spray equipment and road maintenance functions.
Skill in: mechanical and manual application of herbicides and biological control agents; application of safety practices; operation of light and heavy equipment and hand tools.
Ability to: communicate effectively both orally and in writing; understand and follow written and verbal instructions; establish and maintain records, reports and statistical data; work alone or as a member of a team; make decision independently in accordance with established policy and procedure; use initiative and good judgment in the performance of tasks and responsibilities; meet and interact in a professional and effective manner with other employees, outside vendors and the public.
QUIDELINES
All work is performed within departmental policy and procedure; Federal, State and County rules, regulations and ordinances and personnel policies; weed identification, chemical and herbicide reference material. Employee uses good judgment, initiative and experience to interpret and choose between alternate guidelines, however the Road Supervisor is available for interpretation in unusual situations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTEmployee will have contact with co-workers, the County Court, Weed Advisory Board, regulatory agencies, chemical company vendors and the public to exchange information, provide services or obtain materials.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is performed in the office and in the field. Field and Road work involves bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, standing, walking and working in all weather conditions. A considerable amount of driving is required.
HOURS WORKED PER WEEK40 (generally works 4 10-hour days Monday - Thursday) Evening and weekend work may be required due to emergencies and bad roads because of weather. May be required to work an alternate schedule such as reporting to work early to spray during warmer weather.
