JOB PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Assistant County Engineer, performs routine engineering, survey, and maintenance activities according to specific instructions and project requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Performs the collection of survey data while operating GPS equipment and levels for the design and construction of roads and bridges.

Makes independent decisions in the field to determine best fit of established construction plans in order to lead a survey team in staking projects.

Performs field inspections and material tests of contractor's operations and supplied materials for acceptance and conformance to plans and specifications by using basic engineering equipment (ie. aggregate sieves, scales, levels, DCP, slump cone).

Maintain accurate database of County owned infrastructure assets (ie, in place culverts, guardrail, and bridges) and perform routine inspection of those assets.

May assist on various highway maintenance duties as required.

Performs engineering research work in the office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Curiosity and an aptitude toward construction and creation of infrastructure.

Calculate mathematical computations accurately; comprehend use of technical engineering instruments; comprehend and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, engineers, contractors, and the general public.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES/REQUIREMENTS:

Work may be dirty and potentially hazardous at times; subject to injury caused by being struck by a vehicle while working on the highways. Work in adverse weather conditions. Work long days during construction season. Work may involve carrying objects weighing over fifty (50) pounds.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:

In the highway department with minimum staff each employee is responsible to do various tasks.
