Job Description Summary
The purpose of this job is to manage assigned fire battalions and command large-scale or multi-company emergency incidents within the city. Ensures minimum staffing levels and develops schedules; tracks shift personnel attendance; and trains and evaluates staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Supervises, manages, and evaluates assigned employees and makes decisions about hiring, and discipline of employees; prioritizes and assigns work; develops and oversees employee work schedules and approves time away from work; provides and/or facilitates employee training and development; addresses employee concerns and/or problems; counsels and/or disciplines as appropriate; completes employee performance appraisals; determines or makes recommendations regarding new hire salaries; and acts as liaison between employees and management.
Conducts administrative duties and maintains records.
Maintains minimum staffing levels.
Manages emergency incidents and commands scenes.
Communicates with internal staff and external stakeholders, including the public.
Serves as a fire code enforcement official for the Fire Department
Performs fire investigations to determine the cause and origin of fires.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Work requires managing and monitoring work performance by directing multiple groups of employees across more than one business function, including making decisions on hiring, disciplinary actions, evaluating program/work objectives and effectiveness, conducting performance evaluations, and realigning work and staffing assignments, as needed.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
MUST BE A CURRENT CITY OF COLUMBIA EMPLOYEE HAVING SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A PROBATIONARY PERIOD.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent.
Associate's degree preferred.
Minimum of 7 years of related experience with at least one year as a Company Officer or Assistant Fire Marshal (meeting all required qualifications for the Assistant Fire Marshal position).
Licenses or Certifications
MUST POSSESS AND MAINTAIN THE FOLLOWING LICENSES
Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B)
CPR Certification
Missouri Division of Fire Safety Fire Officer I Certification
Missouri Division of Fire Safety Fire Instructor I Certification
Missouri Division of Fire Safety Firefighter I and II Certification
Valid driver's license.

This position involves occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards and outside work.
Incumbents may be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 35 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 35 pounds of force constantly, having to move objects.
Incumbents required to maintain mental/physical health required to perform essential functions of the job. Required to successfully complete a post-offer pre-employment medical physical and at least annually thereafter.
Incumbents are required to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as needed.

48-on; 96-off rotating, potential emergency on call or Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

$90,866-$107,434 Min-Midpoint; Promotional Increase
