MAJOR FUNCTIONS
Under the guidance and leadership of the Public Works Director, the Utility Service Worker performs a variety of maintenance, construction, repairs of water and sewer lines and equipment within the Underground Utilities Division.
This is an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Opens and closes trenches.
Performs maintenance and repair work on sewer mains, manholes, valves, hydrants, broken water lines and force mains.
Operates various equipment such as a boring (mole) machine to install water services.
Drives a service/crew truck as needed to perform assigned duties.
Restores the ground around roadways and rights-of-way to their original condition by backfilling, replacing sod, etc.
Operates tamping and compaction equipment to compact backfill.
Keeps job site clean and vehicles/equipment in good working order.
Obtains supplies from the warehouse and keeps the work truck stocked with required supplies.
Assists in traffic control around job sites.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to work during inclement weather conditions.
Ability and desire to comply with all City safety policies and programs in the performance of their work to include, but not limited to, vehicles, equipment, tools and facilities.
Ability to work from blueprints, rough sketches and maps.
Ability to understand, follow and communicate in writing.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor (digging, lifting, etc.) for extended periods, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools of one or more of the masonry and pavement trades.
Ability to understand, follow and communicate in writing.
Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved and take precautionary methods to protect oneself and others.
Basic knowledge of DOT specifications and other regulations pertaining to this trade.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required.
One (1) year of maintenance or construction experience is preferred.
Valid Driver's License
A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
