Job Description Summary
Southwestern Michigan College is seeking a Middle/High School Tutor student employee who is dedicated, enthusiastic and excited to work with low income first generation middle and high school students.
The Tutor works to guide other students through middle and high school and onto a post-secondary education. This position will be under direct supervision of the ETS Director and indirectly supervised by the ETS Tutor/Mentor Coordinator/Advisor. The Tutor is responsible for assisting middle or high school students to reach their full academic potential and achieve academic success.
Can work up to 20 hours per week.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves students in Cass County schools
Provides participants with both individual and group tutorial sessions, and homework assistance to improve grades and GPA, as well as instruction/tutoring for standardized assessments
Maintains appropriate records of hours and teaching notes
Assesses the needs of students and prepares written documentation
Is a positive role model
Establishes rapport and builds relationships
Sets expectations and boundaries
Facilitates, teaches or instructs
Demonstrates excellent listening and interpersonal skills
Demonstrates excellent problem solving skills and good judgment
Knowledge of reading and math fundamentals
Knowledge or tutoring or teaching techniques
Knowledge of working with disadvantage and under-represented youth

Required Qualifications
High School Degree/GED
Working towards an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree
Preferred Qualifications
Associate's Degree in related tutoring subject
Teaching experience with middle and high school students
Other Information
Tutors will not be compensated for drive time to schools. Mileage will not be compensated unless Tutor is placed at multiple target schools and with the approval of supervisor.
Special Instructions to Applicants
You must be enrolled at the College on a full-time or part-time basis (minimum of 6 credit hours during fall and spring semesters and 3 credit hours during the summer semester); contact hours will not be used to meet the 6 credit hour minimum.
High-school students who are dual enrolled are eligible for student employment. You must also meet the credit hour requirement.
OR
You must be enrolled or continuing your education with a four-year College partner, on the campus of SMC, and be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours and at least 1 SMC credit hour during the fall and spring semesters and 3 credit hours and at least 1 SMC credit hour during the summer semester.
All student employees must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to be eligible for student employment.

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
3. The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision.
The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
4. The conditions the employee will be subject to in this position.
The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
