Position Description

ENTRY SALARY: $12.00/hr

The City of Clearwater has a need for temporary variable employees classified as variable instructors to supplement our permanent workforce. These variable instructors are invaluable in meeting the mission of the agency.

The definition of a Variable Instructor:

Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.

Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.Under direct supervision, the Variable Instructor is responsible for providing instruction and leadership in recreational and educational activities and programs. Responsible for leading a group of participants through a safe and effective recreation sponsored class/program by providing superior leadership and supervision. Maintain current nationally recognized certifications and training needed to conduct the class/program. Additional duties include planning, scheduling and facilitation all aspects connected with stated class/program. Work assignments, locations and schedules could vary between classes, sessions and other needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled class start time.

Clean up after each class.

Must teach all classes agreed upon according to the current schedule.

Establish a friendly atmosphere.

Pass on participants concerns immediately to the supervisor.

Provide excellent customer service.

Enters class participation stats on the sheets provided.

Adhere to all building policies and procedures and assist as needing during emergencies.

Serve as a role model to and maintain a professional attitude towards co-workers and participants.

Prepares plans and implements lessons to have a successful class.

Brings all necessary props, tools and supplies needed to teach the program/class.

Notifies supervisor and participants in case of illness or absence.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:

A valid State driver's license based on area of assignment.

CPR, First Aid, and AED Certifications is preferred.

This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides: Game & sports equipment, art supplies, personal computer, standard office equipment, custodial equipment, and other equipment as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Must be 18 years or older; High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate PLUS one (1) year of experience in program area and three (3) years of teaching similar programs or activities; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
