Position Title: English Teacher
Location: Southampton County Public Schools
Reports To: Principal
Job Summary: The English Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in English language arts, including reading, writing, literature, and language skills. This role involves creating engaging and challenging lesson plans, assessing student progress, and fostering a positive learning environment. The English Teacher will also support students' development of critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Instructional Planning and Delivery:
Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum in English language arts that aligns with state and national standards.
Provide instruction in various areas of English, including literature, composition, grammar, and language usage.
Utilize diverse teaching methods, including lectures, discussions, group work, and multimedia resources to engage students and facilitate learning.
Student Engagement and Assessment:
Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and interest in English language arts.
Assess and evaluate student performance through assignments, tests, projects, and other assessments.
Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support their academic growth and development.
Curriculum Development and Professional Development:
Develop and update instructional materials, lesson plans, and resources to enhance the English curriculum.
Stay current with advancements in English language arts education and best practices through professional development.
Incorporate new trends and innovative teaching strategies into the classroom.
Classroom Management:
Maintain an orderly and respectful classroom environment that supports effective teaching and learning.
Implement and enforce classroom rules and procedures to ensure a productive and safe learning environment.
Address and manage any behavioral issues or disruptions in a fair and consistent manner.
Literacy and Skill Development:
Promote and support students' development of literacy skills, including reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and critical analysis.
Encourage students to engage with a variety of literary genres and texts, fostering a love for reading and writing.
Provide additional support and resources for students who need assistance with reading and writing skills.
Parent and Community Engagement:
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, achievements, and areas for improvement.
Participate in parent-teacher conferences, school meetings, and other events to build strong relationships with families.
Engage with the community to promote literacy and support students' learning experiences outside the classroom.
Administrative Tasks:
Maintain accurate records of student grades, attendance, and other necessary documentation.
Prepare and submit reports, lesson plans, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
Manage classroom supplies and resources, ensuring a well-organized and effective learning environment.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field.
Valid state teaching certification in English or secondary education.
Previous experience teaching English language arts preferred.
Strong knowledge of English literature, composition, grammar, and language usage.
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, and parents.
Proficiency in using educational technology and instructional resources.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, sit, and move around for extended periods.
Capacity to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of educational materials.
Ability to perform tasks involving manual labor, such as setting up classroom activities.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a classroom setting.
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for school events and activities.
