Job Responsibilities
Assists District personnel with bridge construction matters including material problems, workmanship, field changes, troubleshooting, and other contractual matters.
Reviews, coordinates, and/or approves various contractor submittals to include foundation installation plans, formwork/falsework drawings, and change orders. Reviews requests for overruns, construction plan revisions, status of final estimates, requests for extension, contractor claims, and value engineering proposals, making recommendations as needed.
Inspections (stage and final) of bridge projects to determine quality of construction.
Attends conferences and meetings with contractors, engineering firms, and SCDOT personnel concerning work progress and other related construction and engineering matters.
Provides guidance during preconstruction phase regarding development of contract documents, review of Special Provisions, contract time calculations, constructability reviews, and DBE goal setting.
Assists the Director of Construction Office with maintaining construction specifications and guidance documents including, but not limited to the Standard Specifications, the Construction Manual, Supplemental Technical Specifications, and various training materials as needed.
Represents the Director of Construction Office on various committees including, but not limited to research committees, AGC subcommittees, Quality Improvement committees and selection committees.
Manages and participates in the preparation and execution of all tasks needed for On-call Foundation Testing work orders and project specific CEI consultant contracts.
Provides expert testimony in litigation cases, as necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Employee will be under guidance and supervision of the State Bridge Construction Engineer. Employee receives limited supervision and must make major engineering decisions on his/her own.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelor's degree in Engineering and six (6) years of engineering work experience. Necessary Special Requirement: Registration as a Professional Engineer by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
