Sanitarian/Health Program Planner 3

The Town of New Canaan is currently seeking applicants for the position of Sanitarian/Health Program Planner. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and a 4-year college degree in Public Health, Environmental Science or a related field.

Qualifications preferred include: Connecticut certification in Food Service Inspection, Subsurface Sewage Disposal Phase I and II, Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor, QPR Trainer certification, Mental Health First Aid, Registered Sanitarian License or Certified Health Education Specialist License

Desired but not required: Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Matter of Balance Trainer, Certified Pool Operator, Emergency Preparedness Training.

The purposes of this position are to administer & enforce the CT Public Health Code and all local applicable ordinances by: processing, reviewing, inspecting and approving all applications which relate to the Public Health Code, and related federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to food service establishments, salons, daycares, public pools, subsurface sewage disposal systems, wells, and investigate various complaints. The Sanitarian/Health Program Planner will also perform duties related to community health education programming, vaccination clinics and other special projects under the direction of the Director of Health. The Sanitarian/Health Program Planner is required to exercise independent judgment in administering the Public Health Code and resolving issues, and is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control as before mentioned.

In addition, job functions include ongoing professional education and training; working cooperatively with departments, state and federal agencies and community organizations; collecting samples for chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic tests to provide data for use in detecting and preventing disease; interpreting data and following up as necessary and performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Health.
