Job Description
The Spark Watch Utility is responsible for monitoring, identifying, and responding to sparks, embers and other fire in high-heat-production areas. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a safe work environment by preventing fire hazards, ensuring housekeeping standards, and supporting production operations as needed.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Spark & Fire Watch
Continuously monitor designated areas for sparks, embers, or potential fire hazards during and after hot work or production activities such as (welding, cutting or grinding)
Immediately report and respond to unsafe conditions or fire incidents.
Maintain compliance with OSHA and company fire safety protocol.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure fire extinguishers, water hoses, and other firefighting equipment are available and functional.
Follow all lockout/tagout, PPE, and hot-work permit requirements.
In the event of a fire, the spark watch EE is responsible for sounding the alarm, alerting personnel, and contacting emergency services. They may also engage in the initial fire control efforts using extinguishers.
Ensuring that fire safety equipment, such as extinguishers and alarms, is operational and accessible (this is a critical duty)
Housekeeping & Utility Support
Perform cleanup of sawdust, debris, and flammable materials around work areas.
Support production departments with basic utility tasks such as material handling, stacking, sweeping, and maintaining a clear workspace.
Communication & Teamwork
Communicate hazards promptly to supervisors and team members.
Collaborate with maintenance, EHS, and production teams to ensure safe operations.
Participate in safety meetings, training, and required drills.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent; a technical certification or degree in forestry, manufacturing, or a related field is preferred.
Experience:
Prior experience in industrial, manufacturing, or construction environment preferred.
Knowledge of fire safety practices, hot work procedures, and spark/fire watch requirements (training provided)
Skills & Competencies:
Ability to remain attentive and alert during extended monitoring periods.
Strong communication skills and ability to follow detailed safety instructions and to report hazards and coordinate with emergency services.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand 100% of scheduled shift. Lifting, pushing, prying and dragging heavy materials.
Must be capable of bending, stooping, crawling under or over and occasionally climbing of stairs/ladders heights up to 6 or 7 feet.
Abnormal levels of noise due to grinding, chipping, hammering require hearing protection (ear plugs) to be worn at all times.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment
Must be able to lift to 50 pounds\ Position requires manual dexterity, arm-hand steadiness and a safety-minded individual.
Must be able to work in an open environment exposed to extreme temperatures.
