The Martin County is currently accepting applications for a full-time Deputy Sheriff.
The Deputy Sheriff, under general supervision of the County Sheriff and Chief Deputy Sheriff, performs duties to enforce federal, state and local laws; protect citizens of and property in the County; and promote public safety. Regular duties include, but not limited to self-initiating or responding to calls for service for general investigations and traffic enforcement as well as completing death investigations, serving civil process, assisting with special investigations, supervising felony criminal investigations, and educating and enforcing boating, off-roading, and snowmobiling compliance and best practices. While much of this work is performed independently and without the immediate presence of a supervisor, deputies are required to draw upon their life experience, general education, federal, state, and local laws, extensive training, departmental policies and procedures, and other mandates regarding their own response and conduct; both while on-duty and off-duty.
Applicants must be Minnesota POST Board licensed at the time of hire. Applicants will be subject to written, oral, physical, psychological, and background examinations.
2025 Salary Range: $31.35 to $42.63 per hour. Applications will be accepted until position is filled.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responds on or off duty to police calls and/or emergencies as directed.
Deters and detects unlawful activities by effective police work. Includes patrolling assigned areas, checking for suspicious activities and actively seeking wanted persons or property.
Responds to and effectively handles police calls for assistance. Properly investigates complaints and maintains order in disputes.
Responds to and handles medical and police emergencies. Provides rescue help and emergency first aid treatment as necessary. Provides support to Fire Department personnel as necessary and as directed by supervisors.
Apprehends violators. Performs investigation work, including the identification and gathering of evidence, questioning victims, suspects and witnesses, following up on related leads, etc. Takes oral and written statements from victims and witnesses.
Arrests and processes suspects, documents evidence, appear and/or testify in court as required.
Serves subpoenas, Court Orders, and Civil Process as directed.
Monitors and ensures proper flow of traffic. Directs traffic as needed, reports hazardous conditions, gives warnings and issues citations. Also enforces parking ordinances, reports abandoned or damaged vehicles and assists stranded motorists.
Investigates and prepares reports on traffic accidents as directed. Gathers evidence from drivers and witnesses, prepares diagrams of the scene and reports for police records.
Writes detailed reports using basic grammatical skills that clearly represent incidents as they occurred.
Maintains an effective community relationship. Includes answering questions, providing directions and prompt assistance as needed and participates in public relations activities as directed. Handles all other crime prevention duties as assigned.
Improves and maintains individual police skills, including physical conditioning. Stays abreast of developments in the police field and changes in related laws and ordinances.
Ensures proper maintenance and safe operation of assigned vehicles and equipment. Reports damage, loss or improperly operating equipment to an immediate supervisor.
Keeps a superior officer advised of developments and performs other duties as assigned.
Conducts alcohol compliance checks.
Conducts death investigations throughout Martin County to include giving next of kin death notifications.
Supervises all felony criminal investigations, outside of Fairmont, as well as assisting all agencies with criminal and civil investigations.
Assisting courts with security, communications phone calls, and corrections with inmate management and transportation.
Conducts and manages special community projects like Toward Zero Deaths (TZD), and the Sheriff’s Posse.
Assists the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with hunting, fishing, boating, off-roading, and snowmobile engagement, education and enforcement as well as federal and state grant management.
Completes training, maintenance of vehicles, office, and other duty equipment, and manages licensing records per requirements of the Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board.
Participates in continuing education and training sessions on position applicable law and regulation changes, computer skills and other position related matters. Ensures required certification and licensure credentials remain valid.
Performs other work-related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associate’s Degree with principal coursework in criminal justice, police administration and law enforcement.
Currently licensed by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officers Standards and Training, or eligible for licensure upon appointment.
One year of recent progressive experience along with the skills, knowledge and abilities required; or equivalent combined education and experience.
