Director of Operations – Prefabrication Manufacturing

Reports to Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Location [Confidential U.S. Manufacturing Site] – on-site (occasional travel to customer sites & industry events)

A privately held leader in off-site construction, the company engineers and manufactures precision-designed exterior and interior load- and non-load-bearing panelized wall systems in a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled facility. By tightly integrating BIM data with advanced automated equipment, it delivers high-quality prefabricated assemblies that drive safety, speed and sustainability for commercial construction projects nationwide.

Role Summary

The Director of Operations converts strategic vision into flawless, profitable execution on the shop floor. You will own the full P&L and KPI suite for a 100-plus-employee prefabrication plant, champion a culture of Lean, safety and innovation, and partner with Design, Project Management and Field Installation teams to give customers the fastest, highest-quality wall systems in the industry.

Key Responsibilities

AreaRepresentative Duties

Strategic & Financial Leadership

• Develop and execute the annual operations plan, budgets and capital roadmap to support double-digit growth and new product launches.

• Own plant P&L, cost-to-serve and working-capital targets.

Production & Capacity Management

• Plan, organize and run day-to-day operations to exceed customer commitments while optimizing labor, equipment and material utilization.

• Forecast mix/volume, set takt times and balance multi-shift resources for custom BIM-driven projects.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

• Sustain a zero-injury culture; ensure OSHA and relevant building-code compliance.

• Oversee ISO/QA systems, internal audits and corrective actions.

Continuous Improvement

• Lead Kaizen events and Lean/Six-Sigma projects that boost OEE, reduce change-over and eliminate waste; track ROI with a robust KPI dashboard.

Supply Chain & Logistics

• Collaborate with Procurement on steel, sheathing, membranes and fasteners; drive vendor OTIF and inventory turns.

• Own trailer sequencing, shipping schedules and rolling look-aheads with Field Operations.

Technology & Innovation

• Champion digital-to-fabrication workflows, BIM/CAD automation and cold-roll-forming advancements; evaluate new robotics, welding and vision-inspection tech.

Talent & Culture

• Lead, coach and develop a diverse leadership team (production, maintenance, quality, CI, EHS); establish clear goals, feedback loops and succession plans.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Serve as the operations voice with the executive team, major general contractors and owners; host plant tours, lean showcases and customer design reviews.

Qualifications

Education – Bachelor’s in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing/Operations Management, Construction Management or related field; MBA or master’s in Engineering a plus.

Experience – 10–15 years of progressive leadership in discrete manufacturing (building materials, steel fabrication, modular/panelized construction ideal); 5+ years at plant-manager or multi-site level with full P&L.

Technical – Demonstrated Lean/Six-Sigma deployment (Black Belt preferred); BIM or digital-fabrication familiarity; ERP/MRP & KPI dashboard proficiency; knowledge of structural standards and OSHA/EHS regulations.

Leadership & Soft Skills – Strategic thinker, data-driven decision-maker, excellent communicator, adept at change management and team-building across salaried and hourly populations.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Role is primarily performed in a heavy-manufacturing setting with exposure to moving machinery, seasonal temperature fluctuations, noise and occasional vibration; must be able to traverse shop floor, climb ladders and don required PPE.
