Primary Purpose of Position:

This full-time permanent position serves as editor of the North Carolina Governor’s Papers for the Office of Archives and History, building on over a century of work by collecting, transcribing, analyzing, and digitally publishing the papers of North Carolina’s governors. The Governor's Papers Editor works equally as a historian and editor to share the meaning and value of the state’s gubernatorial records by selecting primary sources, researching and explaining those materials, creating metadata as appropriate, and to preparing accompanying interpretive materials, such as exhibits. The sources, transcriptions, essays, and exhibits will be published through MosaicNC, an online publishing platform. Applicants should be comfortable working on constructing a digital database of historical material for a public audience.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Conducting research on North Carolina governors and events in North Carolina history

Preparing and checking drafts of transcriptions

Preparing metadata

Writing and editing interpretive essays and annotations

Publishing materials in a Drupal-based platform

Collecting information for addenda/errata files

Public speaking and/or responding to public requests for information

Position/Physical Requirements:

Must have the ability to read, write, spell, transcribe, and communicate clearly.

Ability to read eighteenth- and nineteenth-century cursive handwriting.

Ability to produce finished copy according to a production schedule, subject to supervisor’s review.

Must be able to work Monday-Friday, scheduled sometime between the hours of 7AM and 5PM, with no more than three days telework per week.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:

Demonstrated knowledge of North Carolina and/or American and/or Southern history.

Demonstrated experience conducting archival and historical research in primary and secondary sources.

Demonstrated experience writing historical material for an adult audience.

Demonstrated experience with digital publishing and/or content management systems (such as Drupal, WordPress).

Management Prefers:

Specialized knowledge of North Carolina history.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in English, journalism, history, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution;

OR

Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, history, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution

AND

two years of experience in a profession requiring research and/or editing as a major job skill;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description:

In keeping with the legislation that created North Carolina Office of Archives and History (then the North Carolina Historical Commission) in 1903, the mission of the Digital Publications section of the Historical Research and Publications Division is to foster, promote, and encourage study and appreciation of state history through accessible online exhibits, hosted on MOSAICNC. By making the state's history and wealth of historical resources available to students, teachers, scholars, and the North Carolinian public at large, the digital publication section fosters and preserves North Carolinian collective memory, while maintaining high professional and editorial standards.Division Description:

The Division of Historical Research and Publications coordinates research and vetting for historical accuracy of written materials produced by various offices of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR). Within the office rest several established programs or initiatives including the publications function of the Office of Archives and History, which extends back to 1907, when the first title appeared. The Historical Research and Publications Division produces the North Carolina Historical Review and is the base for the digital publications unit, MOSAICNC. The office also administers the State Highway Historical Marker Program, in conjunction with the Department of Transportation. The division also shepherds the agency’s commemorative efforts, such as America 250 NC, creatively and responsibly, as directed by DNCR senior leadership.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
