Summary:
Holy Spirit Catholic School is hiring a first grade teacher who excels in teaching the whole child. The best candidate will have a solid understanding of the science of reading from phonemic awareness through fluency. Additionally, this person must be able to use benchmarking to deliver guided reading by using leveled readers. The right candidate will take the child from teacher dependence to more independence by year end. The qualified candidate must know the socio-emotional developmental stages of the first grade child.
The Teacher fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by guiding, inspiring, and educating students in a loving, Christ-centered environment. The Teacher is to be immediately responsible to the principal for the carrying out of policies of the school and the Archdiocese of San Antonio as they relate to the function of the school, the classroom, and the immediate contact with students and parents.
Candidates must have:
Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
Knowledge of curriculum, instructional methods/strategies, and curriculum differentiation
Knowledge of child development, learning and behavior
Able to manage student behavior
Able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms
Able to work well with others in a school community
Skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously
Skill in job appropriate technology
Skill in critical thinking and planning
The ideal candidate will also:
Support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
Act as witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
Support and adhere to the policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees
Maintain confidentiality regarding school matters
Direct and evaluate the learning experience of the student in both curricular and extracurricular activities
Provide guidance to student that promotes his or her welfare and Christian educational development; refer students with problems to those qualified to help.
Carry out carefully constructed lesson plans and maintain documentation of instructional planning
Carry out the disciplinary policies of the school
Attend and participate in PTC, faculty and Archdiocesan meetings
Attend and participate in the scheduled number of In-Service days required by TCCBED and the Archdiocese
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and other professionals
Demonstrate professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
Maintain a work schedule that maximizes availability to the school, students and staff
Keep records of attendance, check home assignments, grade papers and complete report cards
Supervise extracurricular activities as assigned
Supervise arrival and dismissal of students and assists in the supervision of students as needed
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and Texas teacher certification in the appropriate grade level
Understanding of Catholicism and have Religion certification
at least 2 years experience teaching this grade level

The right candidate will be excellent in the English language arts in order to teach reading fluency, reading for understanding and filling in the gaps for late developing readers. The best candidate will be able to teach grammar and writing and create a love of the written work in the students. Knowledge of guided reading groups, benchmarking, and literacy circles is extremely important.
The teacher must be able to teach Religion and instill a love for Jesus to develop the moral compass of honesty, kindness and integrity in their students.
