POSITION SNAPSHOT:
Atwell is seeking a Drafting Intern to join our growing Mechanical Design team.
This internship offers a valuable opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in process equipment, piping design, and facility layout using CAD software. The CAD Drafter/Draftsperson Intern role is designed to provide a strong foundation for a future career in mechanical and industrial design. Current projects include oil & natural gas, CO2, hydrogen, and RNG pipelines and facilities.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Assist in preparing Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) in alignment with industry standards
Generate design documents from 3D models and learn to create piping and equipment models using CADWorx
Read and help develop technical documents such as plot plans, piping plans, sections, details, equipment models, and piping isometric drawings, while ensuring quality in all deliverables
Learn how to interpret and apply customer piping specifications within CADWorx Spec Editor
Support facility and field assessments by helping gather data needed to create accurate as-built documentation
Collaborate with in-house engineering, drafting, and project management teams, as well as outside consultants, inspectors, and operations personnel
Assist in preparing drawings and documents that meet company or client quality standards while adhering to project deadlines
Review and check basic layouts and designs created by other drafters and designers to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable codes and standards
Participate in team meetings—both internal and with clients—to help define project requirements, set delivery timelines, review designs, and track progress
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/COMPENTENCIES:
Proficiency in AutoCAD is required; experience with CADWorx and AutoCAD Plant 3D is a plus
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, such as architectural/civil plans, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), equipment layouts, and piping plans
Able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks
Capable of working independently with minimal supervision
Demonstrates a positive, proactive attitude and strong work ethic
Team-oriented and willing to collaborate effectively with others to achieve project goals
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Background in P&IDs
Demonstrated ability to use 2D and 3D CAD systems to develop design deliverables.
1+ years relevant experience in design for oil and gas related projects.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associates degree, Technical Certificate(s) or equivalent experience (1+ years minimum) in a computer-aided drafting and design setting, will be considered
**Must be willing to travel to job sites from time to time in order to gather required data and meet with clients and construction personnel to provide discipline specific support as necessary. This position does not qualify for company related benefits.**
