Job Summary:
The Building Automation Systems (BAS) Technician is responsible for the programming, troubleshooting, repair, and ongoing maintenance of building automation systems that control HVAC, lighting, energy management, and other integrated building systems across the District. This position supports efforts to optimize building performance, comfort, and energy efficiency. The BAS Technician works under the guidance of the Lead HVAC and Controls Mechanic and collaborates closely with HVAC Mechanics, electricians, and other trades staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain BAS equipment, including controllers, sensors, actuators, relays, and related components to ensure comfort, efficiency, and code compliance.
Troubleshoot and correct issues related to BAS hardware, software, sensors, controllers, and integration with HVAC systems.
Perform diagnostics and coordinate minor repairs for system-connected equipment such as VAVs, boilers, air handlers, and RTUs.
Interface with HVAC mechanics and other trades to support building operations and communicate BAS-related findings.
Review energy consumption and system trend reports; provide recommendations for efficiency improvements.
Assist in estimating materials and labor for BAS-related repair or upgrade projects.
Perform or coordinate software updates, firmware upgrades, and system backups.
Collaborate with IT or controls contractors to maintain network connectivity and secure system communications.
Provide minor technical support for integrated systems such as intercoms, fire alarms, and security controls as they interface with the BAS.
Maintain documentation of system configurations, schedules, alarms, and equipment performance.
Participate in training sessions and vendor coordination to stay current on BAS technology.
Perform other duties as assigned. Education, Training and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent, required. Technical coursework or certification in Building Automation, HVAC Controls, or related field preferred.
Over three years of experience in the repair and maintenance of HVAC, and HVAC controls systems. One year experience in programming HVAC controls. Experience in DDC systems, refrigeration, low voltage electrical, and plumbing systems preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal relation skills
Ability to perform, track, and provide the current status of multiple simultaneous tasks.
Ability to keep sensitive information confidential.
Must have math, writing, and communication skills.
Strong knowledge of BAS operations, control theory, and HVAC equipment.
Ability to ready system schematics and wiring diagrams.
Familiarity with communication protocols.
Working understanding of integrated systems (fire alarm, security, intercom) as they relate to BAS.
Valid Colorado driver’s license required at hire.
EPA 608 certification required. Mech 4 preferred.
Electrical Journeyman license preferred.
Criminal background check and District fingerprinting required.
