Description A Brief Overview\n Physical therapist assistants (PTAs) work under licensed physical therapists to help people with physical injuries or illnesses of to regain range of movement and control their pain.

Under the PT's direction, PTAs help people who have lost motor function due to accidents, illness or age.\n What You Will Do\n\nProvide physical therapy services only under the direction and supervision of a licensed physical therapist.\nInstruct, motivate, safeguard, and assist patients as they practice exercises or functional activities.\nObserve patients during treatments to compile and evaluate data on their responses and progress and provide results to physical therapist in person or through progress notes.\nConfer with physical therapy staff or others to discuss and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying, or coordinating treatment.\nAdminister active or passive manual therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, aquatic physical therapy, or heat, light, sound, or electrical modality treatments, such as ultrasound.\nMeasure patients' range-of-joint motion, body parts, or vital signs to determine effects of treatments or for patient evaluations.\nCommunicate with or instruct caregivers or family members on patient therapeutic activities or treatment plans.\nTransport patients to and from treatment areas, lifting and transferring them according to positioning requirements.\nSecure patients into or onto therapy equipment.\nTrain patients in the use of orthopedic braces, prostheses, or supportive devices.\nAssist patients to dress, undress, or put on and remove supportive devices, such as braces, splints, or slings.\nClean work area and check and store equipment after treatment.\nFit patients for orthopedic braces, prostheses, or supportive devices, such as crutches.\nMonitor operation of equipment and record use of equipment and administration of treatment.\nPerform clerical duties, such as taking inventory, ordering supplies, answering telephone, taking messages, or filling out forms.\nAdminister traction to relieve neck or back pain, using intermittent or static traction equipment.\nPrepare treatment areas and electrotherapy equipment for use by physiotherapists.\nImplement selected components of care and interventions in a technically competent manner.\nIdentify patient’s needs and exhibit compassion, caring, and empathy to individual differences.\nRecommend options, courses of action or modifications in selected treatments ensuring patient’s progress, safety and comfort.\nApply the latest research related to restoring function, reducing symptoms frequency, and preventing injury.\nComplete documentation to support the delivery of physical therapy services.\nPerform selected data collection and obtain accurate information.\nMeasure performance and report on patient’s medical record.\nParticipate in patient status judgments.\nAdhere to ethical and legal standards.\nEnsure continued competence and updated field knowledge.\nAssesses learning needs, develops competency plans and provides opportunities for learning\nParticipate in quality standards and identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes.\nParticipates in departmental meeting and programs.\nDevelop and maintain favorable internal relationships, partnerships with co-workers, including clinical managers, clinical support staff, providers and business office staff.\nCollaborate with all members of the care team in providing patient-centered care.\n\n Additional Responsibilities\n\nPerforms other duties as assigned.\nComplies with all policies and standards.\nFor specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.\nMust abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients.

Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.\nQualifications Education\n\nAssociate's Degree from a college or university accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association (Required)\n\n Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities\n\nStrong level of skill at building relationships and providing excellent customer service.

(Required proficiency)\nHigh degree of knowledge and competency in the practice and associated charting requirements.

(Required proficiency)\nExperience/knowledge of Joint Commission accreditation process and requirements, as well as all federal, state and local regulations and standards associated with the delivery of care in a Federally Qualified Health Center.
