Steps Middle and High School

Overview:

The Principal of Steps Middle and High School will facilitate the implementation of the vision, practices and systems which result in a therapeutic, educational school dedicated to support students in grades Sixth through Twelfth who require an outplacement from their district.

The Principal will report to, and be supervised by, the Director of Special Education.

Qualifications:

Active Connecticut certifications as an Intermediate Administrator (Endorsement #092) AND at least one Special Education category

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships among school personnel, students, parents and community

At least 3 recent years of administrator leadership at the building or central office level is preferred

Proficiency with PowerSchool, CT-SEDS and Google Drive

Ability to create and maintain a nurturing school climate for students and staff

Strong interpersonal skills

Ability and willingness to provide direct support or instruction to students throughout the school day, when/if needed Responsibilities and Expectations:

Implement and adapt the school's curriculum, instructional practices and behavior intervention model to consistently meet the changing student population and needs

Accessible and responsive to the region's Special Education Directors and designee regarding referrals, enrollment, IEP implementation and planful discharge

Attentive supervision, coaching and evaluation of certified and non-certified staff

Elicit the expertise and participation of all members of the school community and external stakeholders in the decision-making processes

Create and implement professional development relevant to all school staff and disciplines

Ensure program compliance with local, state and federal regulations including but not limited to school safety and security, special education law, and confidentiality and maintenance of shared educational records

Recruit and hire for all staff positions assigned to the Steps Middle and High School

Involvement with deescalation of students in crisis, up to and including emergency physical management

Develop and monitor school budget in cooperation with the Director of Special Education
