Position Summary:

The Sr. Safety Manager, Mechanical Department is responsible for leading and managing safety programs and regulatory compliance across all mechanical operations within the railroad. This includes overseeing safety training, auditing field practices, ensuring adherence to FRA and OSHA regulations, and fostering a strong safety culture throughout shops, yards, and mobile repair units.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop, implement, and continuously improve mechanical safety policies and procedures.

Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments of mechanical shops, yards, and field operations.

Ensure compliance with FRA, AAR, OSHA, and company-specific mechanical safety standards.

Lead root cause investigations for incidents and near-misses involving mechanical personnel or equipment.

Oversee hot work, blue flag, and confined space entry programs specific to mechanical operations.

Deliver and coordinate safety training related to mechanical tasks (e.g., lockout/tagout, welding safety, proper lifting techniques, PPE).

Support implementation and enforcement of Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and hazard identification processes.

Partner with site supervisors and crew leads to reinforce safe work behaviors and correct unsafe conditions or practices.

Track safety metrics and prepare reports for leadership to identify trends and drive improvement.

Serve as liaison during safety audits or inspections from FRA, OSHA, or third-party entities.

Qualifications:

Minimum 5 years of experience in rail mechanical operations, with at least 2 years in a safety or supervisory role.

In-depth knowledge of FRA regulations, AAR rules, OSHA standards, and mechanical safety procedures.

Demonstrated experience conducting investigations and developing corrective action plans.

Strong communication skills with the ability to lead training and coach field personnel.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and incident tracking/reporting software.

Safety certifications (e.g., OSHA 30-Hour, FRA Part 243 trainer, or equivalent) preferred.

Ability to travel up to 75%, including overnight stays to field locations.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to work in outdoor industrial environments in all weather conditions.

Ability to walk, stand, climb, and inspect mechanical equipment and railcars.

May require lifting up to 50 lbs.
