POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for using ratchets, sockets, combination wrenches, nut wrenches, and various other hand tools to install pipe fittings for testing and flushing of pipe systems.
Responsible for using a hand torch for cutting and brazing.
Running hoses from flushing equipment to piping systems on the ship.
Fix threading of fittings and braze pipe fittings and pipe valves.
A pipefitter is responsible, with some supervision, for installing, removing, repairing, targeting, laying out, fabricating, and testing marine piping systems such as Auxiliary Salt Water, Fire Main, Potable Water, Hydraulic, Compressed Air, Fuel Oil, Lube Oil, Engine Exhaust etc. in accordance with work item specifications, NAVSEA/Military standards and drawings or other regulatory body standards such as ABS, Military Sealift Command, etc.
New install and fabrication include the use of various shop equipment such as table saws, pipe threading machines, bending machines (power as well as hand operated), drill presses and brazing equipment.
Additional tasks associated with this position include blanking and pressure testing of tanks (structural boundary testing).
The pipefitter is also responsible for providing direction to helpers as directed by the supervisor.
The qualifications and general capabilities listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability desired by customer.
Must be able to pass welder workmanship training with a 75% or higher.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Must have a working knowledge of Silver Brazing theory. (MT Braze in both B-1 and B-2)
Must be able to certify in: 0900-LP-001-7000
Must be able to interpret specifications and Navy/MSC/ABS standard items and manuals. •
Must be able to certify in and use Lok-ring, Swage-Lok, Pyplok, and Viega pipe fittings Pipefitter
Top Level – 2 SKILL, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Position requires high school diploma or equivalent
Must have 5 years minimum of industrial experience in pipefitting, of which 2 years minimum in shipbuilding
Capability to read installation drawings
Must be able to use various mechanical hand tools
Must be able to use a torch for cutting and brazing
Must be able to pull 1 ” and larger hoses to systems for testing
Must be able to fit in small/tight spaces
Must abide by all organizational policies and procedures
Report any deficiencies of piping system that cannot be corrected to supervision
Inspect and prepare the area for work, taking special care if hot work is required.
Verify gas free certifications and tag-outs, before commencing any work.
Run lines and leads required to accomplish work.
Accomplish drop test if using flammable or oxygen depleting gases.
Inspect work for defects before turning the job over to welders.
Correct fit-ups as required.
Confer with supervision or journeyman before correcting deficiencies
Document existing conditions before commencing work and report conditions to the journeyman or supervisor.
Remove damaged pipe in accordance with specifications and as directed by the journeyman or supervisor.
Measure or template pipe for fabrication.
Blank systems in accordance with standard Item 009-24 or other applicable safety standards.
Fit up new pipe using the proper fit up type in accordance with specifications.
Ensure a strain free fit-up to pumps or other connecting equipment.
Blank tanks and accomplish boundary air tests.
Accomplish or verify Lock-out Tag-out requirements before commencing.
Provide direction to a pipefitter Helper if assigned.
Arrive at the designated work site at the assigned time and end the shift as directed by the schedule and pipe shop supervisor.
Work shifts and overtime as assigned.
Be accountable for completion of daily work assignments.
Comply with OSHA standards and best safety practices.
Keep your work area clean and safe at all times, especially at the end of the shift.
Pipefitter - Top Level
Ensure the work site is ready for hot work before commencing hot work.
Communicate with the Fire Watch and provide direction as necessary.
Provide quality work and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required by the work specifications or assigned by the supervisor.

Confer with the supervisor and Journeyman to resolve unexpected events related to your assigned task. Carry out written or oral instructions
Know how mate mechanical pipefittings including unions, flanges, and pipe valves using various hand tools
Have a general understanding of different mechanical threads, bolts, and nuts
Has experience with various mechanical hand tools as previously listed
Must have strong organizational and time management skills
Must have the ability to maintain a professional demeanor
Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals • Must understand US customary and Metric measurement systems
Must be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence
Must be able to measure or template pipe for fabrication
Must be able to care and protect piping systems and blank systems in accordance to quality and safety procedures
Must be able to fit up new pipe using the proper fit up type in accordance with drawing and build specifications including rolling off-sets and other types of fit-up
Must be able to follow Lock-Out Tag-Out and Machinery/Pipe Re-entry Procedures
Must be able to inspect work for defects and correct fit-ups as required prior to turning job over to welders
Must be able to read and understand functional piping system drawings
Must be able to breakdown piping systems, run hoses, install test fittings, and test piping systems with oil and water in accordance to FMM 2C Test procedures
Must have thorough understanding of Navy Ship pipe systems operation
Perform FMM 4C operational tests according to procedures
Must be able to trouble-shoot operational pipe systems issues as they arise
