The Communications Office serves Punahou, both in its entirety and its individual functions. It publicly represents the school in communicating with both broad and targeted audiences through a wide variety of media and efforts. Communications staff leverage specialized skills and experience in design, writing, photography, digital media and other disciplines, and apply best practices throughout the phases of concept, production and execution.

Punahou School is seeking a Communications and Media Relations Manager to help drive strategic storytelling and content development across multiple digital platforms. This role focuses on the planning, creation and implementation of engaging content — including writing, social media, digital photography, and project coordination — while working closely with colleagues across campus and within the Communications team. The Manager supports proactive media relations efforts to promote the School’s positive brand image. Through innovative concept development, thorough research and strong writing skills, they will provide production and media support to advance the School’s goals and effectively engage with its diverse constituents and the broader public. Position duties include, but are not limited to:

Provides writing, editing and project management expertise to develop concepts, create content and manage production of materials that support the School’s strategic objectives. This includes producing articles for the school website and print publications, such as the Punahou Bulletin. Collaborates with diverse colleagues to achieve shared goals, ensuring the creation of impactful content that aligns with the School’s messaging and visual identity. Manages projects efficiently, ensuring timely and successful completion.

Manages Punahou’s social media channels, including digital photography and the consistent posting of original content on Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms. Responsible for thoughtfully moderating user comments and engagement. Collaborates closely with key stakeholders across the school community to ensure accurate, timely content sharing that aligns with the Punahou brand voice. Year-over-year goals will focus on driving follower growth and increasing engagement.

Manages media outreach and press logistics for key school events, such as the Punahou Carnival, speaker events, workshops and other programs, ensuring alignment with communication and social media strategies. This role requires a strong understanding of local media outlets, familiarity with the School’s diverse activities, and close collaboration with staff across campus.

Manages the research and writing needed to respond to media inquiries, create media pitches, and place articles in local, national or international publications or press. Collaborates with archives staff for original research and engages with on-campus and off-campus experts. Demonstrates the ability to efficiently identify key facts, distill them into clear, compelling content, and present them in a concise and impactful manner.

Regularly posts stories, photos, and videos to the school website and online Bulletin to keep content fresh and engaging.

Monitors, tracks, and maintains a comprehensive story log of school news, ensuring it is consistently shared with colleagues on the Communications and Advancement teams.

Develops and distributes monthly media reports to keep school stakeholders informed about key updates and media coverage.

Provides expert copyediting and proofreading services to ensure consistency with brand guidelines, accuracy, and AP style across various materials, including the Punahou Bulletin, Handbook, Code of Conduct, and other school communications.

Position Details:

Work Year: 12 Months

School Year: 2025 - 2026

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:30AM - 4:00PM, schedule may vary based on operational needs

Starting Annual Salary*: $75,000

*Punahou School offers a comprehensive total rewards program that includes competitive pay and benefits. The pay rate, if displayed, is the starting annual salary for the position. Pay for selected candidates will be determined by various factors such as knowledge, skills, abilities, relevant training and experience, and internal equity.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, marketing, English, liberal arts, or a related field – or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Five (5) years of applicable experience in communications, journalism, public relations or a related area.

Demonstrated experience working with media and a strong understanding of the strategic use of social media platforms.

Excellent writing skills and editing skills, with a solid understanding of journalism best practices and proficiency in AP style.

Proficiency in both Windows and Mac operating systems, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), WordPress, internet and email tools; familiarity with AI-driven communication tools and experience with database management systems preferred.

Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

Strong inter-personal and client service skills, with the ability to build collaborative relationships across a dynamic school community.

Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities.
