Job Title: Teradata Specialist

Location: Remote

Reports To: Data Warehouse Manager / IT Infrastructure Lead

Position Overview

We’re seeking an experienced Teradata Specialist to join our project team. In this role, you will be supporting complex migration off of a Teradata platform into a Databricks environment. This role is responsible for optimizing data extracts and queries, managing overall system performance, and ensuring the stability of the Teradata environment. You will leverage your DBA expertise, deep understanding of Teradata utilities, and ETL know-how to drive performance improvements and support our growing analytical workloads.

Key Responsibilities

Performance Optimization & Tuning

Analyze and tune complex SQL queries for optimal response times

Monitor system health and workload management (TASM, Resource Classes)

Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks (data skew, join strategies, indexing)

Teradata Utilities Management

Design, develop, and maintain load/unload processes using FastLoad, MultiLoad, MLoad, TPump, and BTEQ

Build and manage Teradata Parallel Transporter (TPT) scripts for high-volume data movement

Implement best practices for utility parameter settings to maximize throughput

Database Administration (DBA)

Manage user accounts, roles, and security privileges

Perform regular backups, restores, and archiving operations

Plan and execute capacity management and space allocation strategies

Apply patches, upgrades, and system configuration changes

ETL & Data Integration

Collaborate with ETL developers to design efficient data pipelines (DataBricks, DataStage, SSIS, Talend or equivalent)

Troubleshoot and optimize ETL workflows for large-scale data loads

Ensure data quality, consistency, and lineage across source-to-target processes

Monitoring & Incident Management

Investigate and resolve conversion related incidents, service disruptions, and critical production issues

Document runbooks, standard operating procedures, and post-mortem reports

Collaboration & Documentation

Work closely with data architects, BI/reporting teams, and application developers

Provide guidance on changes required to data modeling, partitioning, and indexing strategies to support conversion

Develop & Maintain clear, up-to-date system documentation and knowledgebase articles

Required Skills & Qualifications

Teradata Expertise:

5+ years’ hands-on experience in a production Teradata environment

Strong command of Teradata SQL and Analytics functions

Deep knowledge of Teradata utilities: FastLoad, MultiLoad, MLoad, TPump, BTEQ, and TPT

Database Administration:

User/security management, space management, backup/recovery, and system maintenance

Familiarity with Unix/Linux shell scripting and basic system administration

ETL & Data Warehousing:

Proficiency with at least one enterprise ETL tool (Databricks, Informatica, IBM DataStage, SSIS, Talend etc.)

Solid understanding of dimensional modeling, star schemas, and data mart design

Performance & Optimization:

Experience analyzing explain plans, statistics collection, and index strategies

Skilled at diagnosing data skew, CPU/memory contention, and I/O hotspots

Soft Skills:

Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities

Strong communication skills, able to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders

Team player with a proactive, service-oriented mindset

Preferred Qualifications

Teradata Certified Professional (e.g., Teradata Certified Database Administrator)

Experience with Teradata Active System Management (TASM) and Viewpoint administration

Knowledge of cloud-based Teradata solutions (e.g., Teradata Vantage on AWS/Azure)

Familiarity with version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code tools.
