Duties

Assemble, install, maintain, and repair all types of printing, binding and all other industrial machinery and equipment (i.e., printing, bindery, industrial trucks, power plant and air conditioning units.)

Weld, cut, and braze, manufacture, repair, and rebuild parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals and metal alloys such as stainless steel alloys, aluminum, titanium, magnesium and other materials

Work with materials such as rubber, plastics, and nylon through the use of conventional or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools and precision handwork.

Set up and operate conventional and CNC machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, bench, plain, and universal milling machines; shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, thread cutters, and radial drills.

Work from blueprints, sketches, work orders, models of parts to be made, or other specifications.

Strength test may be required.

Physical Effort-Duties require prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending and reaching. An extensive amount of hand, wrist, and arm movement is involved. Frequent lifting is required for objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Duties are performed inside where there is exposure to flying metal chips, abrasive particles, noise, dirt, coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds which may cause skin irritation.

Qualifications

To qualify for the MACHINIST, you must meet the following requirements:

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION. Element #1: Ability to do the work of a Machinist without more than normal supervision to be considered eligible for the position. Applicants must also have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties. Examples of duties are:

Analyzing interrelated dimensions or complex configuration problems to determine effective solutions;

Troubleshooting a wide range of machines and determining repair processes in conjunction with appropriate engineering and technical authority;

Maintaining and repairing a variety of printing, binding and related machinery and equipment (i.e. printing and bindery, industrial trucks, power plant and air conditioning machinery);

Making independent interpretations of drawings and specifications that are lacking in dimensions, tolerances and types of fits and finishes, and make repairs.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Background Investigation:

To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for a suitability clearance. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Depending on the type of background investigation required, the security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months.
