Principal SCADA Engineer - Control Systems
Location: Denver, CO
An engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced, motivated Principal SCADA Engineer with expertise in industrial control systems to join our team at our Denver location. Due to our work as a Federal Contractor, candidates must be US Citizens.
A full-service electric utility solutions engineering firm in Denver with more than twenty years' experience in electrical utility system ownership, upgrades, maintenance and operations. The company offers comprehensive power system engineering services to investor-owned, municipal, cooperative, government, industrial, and commercial customers.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Design, implement, and maintain SCADA systems for electrical utility networks, substations, and distribution systems
Develop and configure HMI interfaces, RTUs, PLCs, and IEDs for monitoring and control of power system assets
Create detailed system architecture designs for integrated SCADA/DMS/EMS solutions
Perform system integration between SCADA platforms and other operational technology systems
Develop technical specifications for SCADA hardware, software, and communication infrastructure
Configure and test telemetry systems, protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850), and communication networks
Implement cybersecurity measures for critical OT infrastructure according to NERC CIP standards
Create functional specifications and testing procedures for SCADA implementations
Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for new deployments
Troubleshoot complex SCADA system issues and implement solutions
Develop automation scripts and logic for power system operations
Maintain system documentation including network diagrams, I/O lists, and operational procedures
Conduct field surveys to determine project requirements and solutions
Serve as technical lead for SCADA aspects of substation and distribution automation projects
Provide expert guidance to clients regarding control system modernization strategies
Mentor junior engineers in SCADA/automation principles and implementation
Stay current with industry standards, cybersecurity requirements, and emerging technologies
Travel:
Up to 20% to client sites outside CO
Skills and Qualifications:
BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field from an accredited university
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
10+ years of experience implementing and supporting SCADA systems in electrical utility environments
Expert knowledge of industrial protocols, RTUs, PLCs, and control system architecture
Strong understanding of electrical power systems, including substations and distribution networks
Experience with major SCADA platforms (e.g., Wonderware, GE iFIX, Siemens WinCC, OSI PI)
Proficiency in PLC programming, HMI development, and network communications
Knowledge of cybersecurity principles for operational technology
Experience with distribution automation, smart grid technologies, and outage management systems
Strong project management skills with ability to lead technical implementations
Excellent troubleshooting abilities with both hardware and software systems
Superior communication skills for effective collaboration with clients and technical teams
